Re: Questions regarding Siri shortcuts

2019-03-12 Thread Terri Stimmel

On Hello Mark and Bill,

First of all, thank you to Bill for letting me know how Siri was
spelled. I am not the greatest with spelling. And a lot of times, I tend
to forget how words are spelled.

Thank you to Mark for letting me know that there are different ways to
get to my shortcuts. I was not aware of this.

Well 1 of the shortcuts I created, was for the Google assistant. I
installed it, because it seems better at some things. For instance,
helping me get some cooking directions for things I cook pretty regularly.

The other shortcut I made was just kind of a test. I made a shortcut to
record a voice demo. Both shortcuts seem to work well, from what i can tell.
I do hope this is helpful for someone else.

Thank you,

I believe you would be safer to keep auto brightness off. It doesn’t take that
much time to change the brightness for someone sighted.

Susie, a word or two more about screen brightness vs. screen curtain on/off.
The quickest, simplest way to change brightneess is, indeed,  with SIRI. You
may also want to know that setting brightness to zero saves battery power,
while having brightness raised to 50% or 75% and turning on your screen curtain
does not save battery. The screen curtain is a voice over feature whose
purpose, I think, is to provide privacy for the VO user who will not know if
someone is looking over her shoulder when using her phone in a public place.

Hi all.

On my iPhone 7S, I have my screen brightness set to zero, as I don’t look at
the screen at all. However, my sighted daughter sometimes would like to use my
phone, to take a picture or some such. Of course my screen brightness setting
makes her nuts. I have gone into  Settings and changed the brightness to 70 or
80%, but the next time she looks at the phone, she says “the screen’s not
working.”

What am I missing? I realize sighted people are Muggles, but sometimes we need

New ‘Apple News Magazine’ details uncovered in iOS and Mac betas: PDF-based, offline reading, more

2019-03-12 Thread Mary Otten
This is interesting. I wonder how they’re going to make those PDF magazines
accessible and efficient Lee navigable. I hope they do. On the other hand, I
can’t imagine a publisher signing onto this deal and having to give Apple 50%
of the money. That seems a bit much.

New ‘Apple News Magazine’ details uncovered in iOS and Mac betas: PDF-based,
offline reading, more
9to5Mac / Chance Miller

Apple officially announced its March event yesterday, inviting press to Steve
Jobs Theater on March 25th. At the event, the company is likely to announce a
premium subscription service for Apple News. As expected, the latest betas of
iOS 12.2 and macOS 10.14.4 lay the groundwork for the service.

As outlined by developer Steve Troughton-Smith on Twitter, iOS 12.2 and macOS
10.14.4 include several references to the magazine subscription service within
Apple News. For instance, Apple lays out all of the different magazine genres
that will be included:

Automotive
Business & Finance
Crafts & Hobby
Entertainment
Fashion & Style
 Food & Cooking
Health & Fitness
Home & Gardening
Kids & Parenting
Men’s Lifestyle
News & Politics
Science & Technology
Sports & Recreation
Travel
Women’s Lifestyle
Other tidbits discovered in the latest iOS and macOS betas include that
magazines will be PDF-based and support downloading for offline reading.
There’s also support for push notifications when new issues of magazines are
available, seemingly both on iOS and macOS.

Much of Apple’s technology for the Apple News integration with magazines likely
comes from its acquisition of Texture. Apple acquired Texture last year as part
of its efforts to build out Apple News. Texture is a $10 per month magazine
subscription service, and reports have suggested that Apple’s magazine service
will be similarly priced.

Apple’s relationship with publishers has reportedly become strained throughout
the negotiations for the Apple News subscription service. Apple is reportedly
seeking a 50 percent cut of revenue from the service, with publishers splitting
the remaining 50 percent. While many publishers have reportedly pushed back at
this split, Apple is believed to have signed some to such a deal.

Apple will likely unveil its Apple News subscription service later this month
at its March 25th event, as well as its streaming video service. What features
do you hope to see? Let us know down in the comments.

There's a bunch you can discern about Apple News' magazines from what's in the
OS betas: for example, the magazines are PDF-based (like most iPad magazines),
and issues can be stored offline. The magazine genres are listed as pictured.
Most of its code is written in Swift pic.twitter.com/Uc1gN0qygu

Greetings,

Seeing AI has a great update today.

One of my favorite changes is that you can reoer the channels to have them
in your preferred order.

I will explain it in the context of the list below.

Mar 12, 2019: Version 3.0

•Explore photos by touch: This new feature allows you to explore how
objects in a photo are arranged. Select "Explore Photo" from the Scene channel,
photo

browser, or when recognizing photos from other apps. Then, move your finger
over the screen to hear where objects are located.

•All new iPad support.

•Get faster access to your favorite features by customizing the order in
which channels are shown.

To do this, open the menu from the main screen, go to
settings, then Reorder Channels.

The channels are listed in reverse order on the screen. Short Text is
listed at the top, and Light detection is the bottom. Next to each channel is
a “reorder button.”

Hold that button and drag the apps to your preferred arrangement,
remembering that on the main screen when you are done, Short Text will be the
first channel.

VoiceOver users of course have to double tap and hold the second tap.

It works great!

•On the Person channel, you can now teach Seeing AI to recognize someone
new, directly from the main screen.

The Face Recognition button is now on the main screen. A
few left flicks from the person channel.

•When recognizing photos from other apps, you will now hear the processing
sound as in the main app.

Enjoy,

Richard

Subject: seeing AI version 3 update today

Greetings,

Seeing AI has a great update today.

One of my favorite changes is that you can reoer the channels to have them in
your preferred order.

I will explain it in the context of the list below.

Mar 12, 2019: Version 3.0

•Explore photos by touch: This new feature allows you to explore how objects in
a photo are arranged. Select "Explore Photo" from the Scene channel, photo

browser, or when recognizing photos from other apps. Then, move your finger
over the screen to hear where objects are located.

•All new iPad support.

•Get faster access to your favorite features by customizing the order in which
channels are shown.

To do this, open the menu from the main screen, go to settings,
then Reorder Channels.

The channels are listed in reverse order on the screen. Short Text is listed
at the top, and Light detection is the bottom. Next to each channel is a
“reorder button.”

Hold that button and drag the apps to your preferred arrangement, remembering
that on the main screen when you are done, Short Text will be the first channel.

VoiceOver users of course have to double tap and hold the second tap.

It works great!

•On the Person channel, you can now teach Seeing AI to recognize someone new,
directly from the main screen.

The Face Recognition button is now on the main screen. A few
left flicks from the person channel.

•When recognizing photos from other apps, you will now hear the processing
sound as in the main app.

Enjoy,

Richard

Re: Can you send stickers in iMessages

There are some that are included in Messages, like for Music, Photos,
and other native iOS apps. Others, like YouTube or other external
apps, you have to download separate.

Hi,
Are there are a bunch included by default in the messages app. I didn’t see
stickers anywhere when I had the messaging apps visible. I didn’t think you
had to download them but not sure as I usually just use them in Facebook or
messenger but have seen friends send them in the messages app and I thought you
could have a bunch to choose from there.

Yes, you can absolutely send stickers in iMessages. Not all stickers
are accessible, or have labeled images though. Some time ago I
downloaded some stickers from the American Printing House called
Braille Badges, and were a collection of blindness related stickers,
such as saying different words or phrases in Braille, had guide dogs

they were free, but if not, then they cost no more than $0.99 US. I
haven't used stickers in quite some time since the included emojis
usually meet my needs. Basically, you download the stickers from the
regular App Store, or the Messaging app store, show the messaging apps
button, swipe right past the editing text area to the messaging apps,
double tap an app, and then swipe left I think to the list of
stickers. That should get you started. The included or downloaded

Enjoy,

Richard

I realize sighted people are Muggles, but sometimes we need
to share the phone with one. LOL

Re: any accessible travel app?

2019-03-12 Thread Wayne Merritt
You should be able to use the apps for the individual transportation
companies, such as an airline or bus line, depending on what you have
in your area. Certainly some apps will work better than others. I've
used Booking.com before and that works fairly well with VoiceOver,
though it can be tricky at times. Everything is accessible in that
app. I mean that it has it's own quirks.

But if you have auto brightness turned on, and your screen curtain on, it

Susie, a word or two more about screen brightness vs. screen curtain on/off.
The quickest, simplest way to change brightneess is, indeed, with SIRI. You
may also want to know that setting brightness to zero saves battery power,
while having brightness raised to 50% or 75% and turning on your screen curtain
does not save battery. The screen curtain is a voice over feature whose

someone is looking over her shoulder when using her phone in a public place.

I realize sighted people are Muggles, but sometimes we
need to share the phone with one. LOL

RE: Questions regarding Seri shortcuts

2019-03-12 Thread Bill Outman
There are some AppleVis podcasts from the last few months on the topic of Siri
Short Cuts, three in fact. I listened to them over the weekend, but haven't
fully digested all the material, though Thomas Domville gives some good
explanations and demonstrations. You might want to give those a listen.

By the way, Siri is spelled S I r i.

It would be interesting to hear about what you have created. There are a
couple I'd like to create if I can, in cases where Siri has difficulty
understanding me.

Subject: Questions regarding Seri shortcuts

Hello everyone,

I am wanting to set up some Seri shortcuts. I haven’t ever done this before. I
actually managed to make 2 shortcuts. But I can’t seem to get them to work.

Should I possibly restart my phone, in order for these shortcuts to take affect?
Or do I have to actually say hey Seri, and then give my shortcut?
I hope that this isn’t the case. If so, that seems sort of silly to me. But
that could just be me.

I would appreciate any thoughts, or suggestions.

Thank you,

Terri

Andy,, you could try to uninstall the firefox you have now. Rfirst you could
do a system restore before it updated. Another suggestion for a browser that
works well with windows 7 is crome. One site we were having some trouble with
was the tv land site, and crome worked better with the web page than the newer
