Yup. Like any other service or website that's got an app. Just use your login

Thanks for that information. There’s a 25% off deal going right now, which
isn’t as good as what you got, but certainly beats full price. And it’s
football season. What more need be said?
So if I subscribe on the website, then I am going to be able to use the app on
my phone, right? I mean follow teams and stories and whatever. I understand
your advice about using the computer, but sometimes the phone is more
convenient. Also, I noticed that on the website, using Firefox, there are I
believe seven tabs. None of them have labels. That’s not a good sign.

Re: About Optimize Battery Charging

2019-09-21 Thread Kathy Brandt

On Sep 21, 2019, at 3:43 PM, Feliciano Godoy wrote:

Hi all,
Earlier this month, this topic was discussed. Below is information on optimize
battery charging from Apple.
With iOS 13, your iPhone learns from your daily charging habits to improve the
lifespan of your battery.

A battery’s lifespan is related to its chemical age, which is more than just
the length of time since the battery was assembled. A battery's chemical age
results from a complex combination of several factors, including temperature
history and charging pattern. All rechargeable batteries are consumable
components that become less effective as they chemically age. As lithium-ion
batteries chemically age, the amount of charge they can hold diminishes,
resulting in reduced battery life and reduced peak performance. Learn more
about iPhone battery and performance and how to maximize battery performance
and lifespan.
iOS 13 uses Optimized Battery Charging to slow the rate of battery aging by
reducing the time that your iPhone spends fully charged. Your iPhone uses
on-device machine learning to understand your daily charging routine so that it
can wait until you need to use your iPhone to finish charging past 80 percent.*
Charging in this way reduces the wear on your battery and improves its
lifespan. Optimized Battery Charging is active only when your iPhone predicts
that it will be connected to a charger for a long period of time.

Optimized Battery charging is on by default when you set up your iPhone or
after updating to iOS 13. If you notice that your iPhone is often only
partially charged—for example, if you don’t charge your iPhone overnight—you
can go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and turn off Optimized Battery
Charging.

When optimized battery charging is active, a notification on the Lock screen
says when your iPhone will be fully charged. If you need to have your iPhone
fully charged sooner, touch and hold the notification and then tap Charge Now.

Re: major facebook problem

2019-09-21 Thread Donna
Hi,

I’m going to try to help...First, I have a few questions...
1. Are you using an iDevice or computer?
2. If an iDevice are you trying to do this using Safari or the Facebook app?
3. Are you sure that the phone number & all e-mail(s) used are up-to -date in
your Facebook account?
4. When trying to have Facebook to text you a code, did Facebook offer a list
of options of a way to send the code, text message & e-mail? Or was there an
edit box & you entered in your phone number?
5. At the bottom of the page there may be a link that says “ No longer have
access to these?”? If this link is there, have you tried clicking on it to see
if you can change your password?
6. Has this Facebook account been inactive for a long while? I’m assuming not,
but we both know the saying about assume.

If you want you can e-mail me privately, so not to clutter the list.

RE: The athletic

2019-09-21 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
I'm a subscriber to The Athletic. They've always got deals and promos floating
around. So whatever you do, don’t' pay full price. I think the first year I
signed up, I grabbed an intro deal for around $36. When my annual sub came up,
I canceled the renewal and subscribed under another email I have with an MLB
opening day promo they had for something like $24. They've got good stuff, but
yeah, I'm not paying $60 a year just for coverage of the A's.
The iOS app is meh. I only downloaded it to access a podcast that I wanted to
listen to and as they don't allow for their podcast content to be played on
third party podcasting apps...
Anyway, if I read a story via the app, it's usually because I clicked through a
link on Twitter from some journalists I follow or while browsing other articles
on the internet where they mention a story from The Athletic.
I mean, in a general sense, the app's accessible, but it could use some
attention. I know off-hand, you can't rate a story with Voiceover on the app
and as far as selecting teams and trying to do your profile, you're just better
off doing that sort of stuff through the website itself.

Just today, I read a very positive review for an app that you can get in the
App Store for the iPhone. It is the athletic. This is a publication which
concentrates on sports of all sorts. They have a website, and you can subscribe
there as well. It’s also available on android. Right now, if you go to the
website, you can get a better deal then you can if you subscribe through
iTunes. Is anyone using this app? If you subscribe through the website, can you
get it on the Apple app? Or must you have subscribe through iTunes? Also, the
review I read said that it worked well with voiceover. I can’t figure out how
to add teams. That is, I see teams or can search for teams and add them, but
nothing happens. I don’t get a list of teams. Has anybody use the app?

Robin,

The Tape
King
is a talking tape measure from an Austrian company called CareTec. They also
make, I think, talking kitchen scales and canes.
The link will take you to their website which includes a manual for the product.
As for size, the Cobalt at least is not really all that much larger than a
large carpenters tape, I guess it is larger if you compare the length of the
tape since a similar sized quality tape which is non-talking probably has at
least a 25 foot tape and not only a 15 foot tape and you can get 15 foot tapes
which are more compact, but they also have a narrower, less rigid tape.
The point is that you can’t make a tape with tactile markings which gives you
1/16 inch accuracy, the click rule or Rotomatic is different since it’s tactile
in a way down to the half inch or 1 cm on the metric unit, but then the 1/16 or
1mm accuracy is achieved through the “clicks” on the click rule. These are
achieved by a spring-loaded pin producing an audible click which you can also
feel as you push the threaded rod in or out of the housing and the pin clicks
in place in each thread. With the Rotomatic the same is accomplished by turning
the stop along the threaded rod, each full, 360 degree turn is 1/16, a half
turn is 1/32 and a quarter turn is 1/64. Each unit has a lock screw so you can
lock the measurement you selected into place after you set it up, they are
very ingenious devices, extremely precise and very durable.
I typically use my click rule for doing “real” woodworking as in building
furniture, drawers, Shaker-style doors as you often find on kitchen cabinets
etc. Here real precision at least to the sixteenth of an inch is necessary.
If it’s more carpentry oriented like doing baseboard, door or window trim,
framing interior walls or if it involves measurements more than 5 or 6 feet
long I usually use the talking tape measure.
For very small measurements and machine setup like setting the table saw at a
certain distance from the blade and if said distance is no more than 3 to 6
inches I often use my setup blocks/bars which I described. Those are especially
handy for cutting say 2 ½, 2 ¾ or 3 inch wide strips of hardwood for the rails
and stiles on a panel door like a raised panel or Shaker-style cabinet door. I
just use the 1/2/3 inch block which is 3 inches long, 2 inches wide and 1 inch
thick, if I want 3 inches I use it as is in the proper direction, if I want 2 ½
inches I use it the other way and add a ½ inch block, if I want 2 ¾ inches I
use the 2 inch side and a ¾ inch block etc. My 15-block set goes down to a very
thin 1/32 inch block, then it has a 1/6 inch block, a 3/32 inch, an 1/8 inch
etc. I can use a combination of blocks to make up just about anything I want.
There are also digital measuring devices such as digital calipers or angle
blocks which are available with Bluetooth and where you can then use the iPhone
to obtain a spoken value.
Barry Wixey from Wixey
Tools
offers a digital Bluetooth angle cube and he also has a table saw fence setup
which when properly installed shows the distance from the fence to the blade on
a display. He is currently working on a Bluetooth module which would then send
the information to his app where it would be spoken.

Best regards,
Sieghard

About Optimize Battery Charging

2019-09-21 Thread Feliciano Godoy
Hi all,
Earlier this month, this topic was discussed.

Learn more
about iPhone battery and performance and
how to maximize battery performance and
lifespan.

iOS 13 uses Optimized Battery Charging to slow the rate of battery aging by
reducing the time that your iPhone spends fully charged.

[cid:image001.jpg@01D5707A.180FB020]

Optimized Battery charging is on by default when you set up your iPhone or
after updating to iOS 13. If you notice that your iPhone is often only
partially charged—for example, if you don’t charge your iPhone overnight—you
can go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and turn off Optimized Battery
Charging.

[cid:image002.png@01D5707A.180FB020]

[cid:image003.jpg@01D5707A.180FB020]

When optimized battery charging is active, a notification on the Lock screen
says when your iPhone will be fully charged. If you need to have your iPhone
fully charged sooner, touch and hold the notification and then tap Charge Now.

Small annoyance in braille screen input.

2019-09-21 Thread Matthew Bullis
While running IOS13, which I upgraded the other day, I notice that after most
words I'm typing, I hear the little sound that you get when perhaps you get
when spelling correction. However, I have that turned off, along with text
prediction. Does anyone know what this is trying to do? It doesn't seem to fix
any text I write though. The biggest issue I've run into is that you can't use
the scrub gesture to leave braille screen input. You need to turn the rotor. I
found no command I could assign for the scrub gesture. I thought one of them
called quick action might do the trick, but that actually cleared what I wrote.
Does anyone have any suggesttions, or if there's a setting to be changed?
Thanks,
MatthewS

RE: accessible measuring app?

2019-09-21 Thread Richard Turner
He did have a digital caliper on his site, so I’ll find his contact info and
drop him a note.

Thanks so much for all this. My client will appreciate it very much.

I can’t remember if Barry Wixey has a Bluetooth caliper.
The caliper I have is not accessible in itself, i.e. it does not talk. But if
you buy the Bluetooth model you can pair it to the iPhone where it shows up as
“Bluetooth Keyboard”, I then open the Calculator app since I find it easiest
and whenever I press the button on the caliper to send the measurement
Voiceover automatically speaks it since it’s like entering a number with a
keyboard. You could also open a new note and it would be entered there, but
then you have to touch the phone to go back and read it whereas in the
Calculator app it is automatic.
Here is the caliper I have:
ORIGIN-CAL DIGITAL CALIPERS
W/BLUETOOTH
You may need a bit of help initially to know what the buttons are, too pair it
and so on and it’s a bit temperamental in terms of reconnecting, but while I
don’t have time right now, I can send you a description on how to do it later.
As I said, these are just showing up as an input device and it works well with
the Calculator app to have the result spoken, Wixey has an app and it works
great with his digital Bluetooth angle cube, but not sure if he has a caliper.

2019-09-21 Thread Richard Turner
I guess my message wasn't clear.
I have always had more than one language installed and the Language item in the
rotor has always been grayed out as far back as I can remember, which is
however long the rotor has existed with VoiceOver.

It would be nice if it could be taken out of the rotor for a time, especially
now since iOS 13 the rotor jumps all over hell and back (even on the beta of
13.1) and too often lands on language ...

Whether there is one or 5, it is always dimmed.

Could this be a country specific thing?

If you have the option to unselect it from the rotor; now or ever, I suspect it
could be a country specific thing.
I have checked on iPads from Pro to Air 2, iPad Minis, IPod touches, iPhones
from 5S to Xr.

Later,
Richard

I think that is everybody's choice and decision and since iOS 13.1 is going to
be released to the public apparently this coming Tuesday it is not a long wait.

As for the language rotor I thought you referred to it being dimmed if you turn
the rotor to languages. I think the reason why it is greyed out/dimmed in
Voiceover settings > Rotor is because it is not present if you have only one
language downloaded, once you download more than one language it shows up and
at least to me there is no reason why one would not want to have it in the
rotor since switching languages otherwise would be impossible and I assume
Apple thought the same way and decided that this way somebody wouldn't
accidently remove it and then wonder why they can't access their languages any
more.

Hi, I noticed language also grade out in my iOS 13. I also noticed that braille
table was grade out. To my way of thinking, it would be more important to gray
out language than braille table. I would like to take braille table out of my
rotor. I think a lot of what Apple has done is to make the rotor Show links and
visited links or whatever you have in the rotor at the time that it is needed.
I changed the gesture to do the rotor to make it easier for me and also so I
could teach a friend of mine how to finally get rotor options. I think it is
going to be a real help to her. She has never been able to use the rotor. I
always did, but this makes it much easier for me.

Robin,

The Tape
King
is a talking tape measure from an Austrian company called CareTec. They also
make, I think, talking kitchen scales and canes.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Barry Wixey from Wixey Tools offers a digital Bluetooth angle cube and he also
has a table saw fence setup which when properly installed shows the distance
from the fence to the blade on a display. He is currently working on a
Bluetooth module which would then send the information to his app where it
would be spoken.

Best regards,

Sieghard

I have been doing woodworking for 20 years and I absolutely agree that a Click

with any degree of accuracy.

There is also the Rotomatic (not sure if I spell this correctly), it is
somewhat the same concept as a Click Rule, but I believe instead of pulling out
a threaded rod which then makes a click every sixteenth of an inch the
Rotomatic works by the user turning a stop along a threaded rod and it can give
you accuracy down to a 1/64 of an inch whereas the imperial click rule is
accurate to 1/16 of an inch and the metric click rule is accurate to 1mm which
is better than a sixteenth, but

I think that is everybody's choice and decision and since iOS 13.1 is going to
be released to the public apparently this coming Tuesday it is not a long wait.

As for the language rotor I thought you referred to it being dimmed if you turn
the rotor to languages. I think the reason why it is greyed out/dimmed in
Voiceover settings > Rotor is because it is not present if you have only one
language downloaded, once you download more than one language it shows up and
at least to me there is no reason why one would not want to have it in the
rotor since switching languages otherwise would be impossible and I assume
Apple thought the same way and decided that this way somebody wouldn't
accidently remove it and then wonder why they can't access their languages any
more.

RE: accessible measuring app?

2019-09-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Robin,

The Tape
King
is a talking tape measure from an Austrian company called CareTec. They also
make, I think, talking kitchen scales and canes.

That is the size of the iPad Mini. The iPad Mini 2019 is a very nice unit.

I got my wife one for her birthday in June.

I have no idea if Apple will come out with something different next Spring.

There is also the new iPad 7 that is 10.2 inches diagonal, which costs less
than the iPad Mini 2019.

My wife prefers the Mini because of its portability.

I have two of those talking tape measures in my shop, and neither one works
anymore. Funny how they will only bounce on the concrete floor two or three
times before failing altogether. I like that I might be able to have them
repaired.
Thx, Albert

Talking Tape Measure by Cobalt – horizons for the Blind

You can of course contact Cobalt directly in England, they’ll ship to you as
far as I know and without the 9 Volt battery it costs 52.95 British Pounds
which converts approx. to
$66 to
$68, maybe $70 max. if your credit card charges a bit of a higher exchange rate
On this Horizons for the Blind
Website it’s $105 US and I have a feeling it will cost less than $35 US to ship
it from England.
I actually was planning to get one shipped, I have 1 which doesn’t work any
more and my second one is getting a bit beat up and I believe if you send them
back they’ll fix them up or replace them. Here in Canada the CNIB sells them
and I find it interesting how a governmental agency puts such a huge mark-up on
stuff, they want $169.95 Canadian for it and it actually shows it’s out of
stock and they don’t know when they get more. 52.95 British Pounds converts to
approx. 88 Canadian Dollars so their price is almost double.

Subject: RE: accessible measuring app?

I have been doing woodworking for 20 years and I absolutely agree that a Click
Rule or talking tape measure are absolutely essential if you want to do stuff
with any degree of accuracy.
There is also the Rotomatic (not sure if I spell this correctly), it is
somewhat the same concept as a Click Rule, but I believe instead of pulling out
a threaded rod which then makes a click every sixteenth of an inch the
Rotomatic works by the user turning a stop along a threaded rod and it can give
you accuracy down to a 1/64 of an inch whereas the imperial click rule is
accurate to 1/16 of an inch and the metric click rule is accurate to 1mm which
is better than a sixteenth, but not quite as good a 1/32.
Having said this, 1/16 is adequate in a lot of situations and 1mm is of course
even better.
The Cobalt talking tape measure if set to imperial is also accurate to 1/16 and
if set to metric it is 1mm. I like the fact that you can include the length of
the housing in your measurement if, for example, you want to measure the inside
of a cabinet or drawer, you can also measure something and push a button to add
that measurement to memory, then measure the next item and add it and so on and
in the end push a button to get a total. This can be handy if you do things
like baseboard trim, they usually come in 16 foot length so I could go and
measure several walls and add up each measurement until I get close to 16 feet
and this way I can minimize waste. The Cobalt can also be set to read out in
inches, feet and inches, e.g. 25 inches or 2 feet 1 inches, on the metric side
you can do metres, centimetres or millimeters, e.g. 1 metre and 10 centimetres
can also be read as 110 centimetres or 1,010 millimetres. I assume that Tape
King can maybe do the same, but I don’t know. Max, could you contact me
off-list as I’d love to learn more about Tape King.
I have both a couple of Cobalt tape measures, I have I think 4 imperial click
rules and 1 metric because when I am really working on a larger project I often
will use 2 or 3 at the same time, e.g. if I want to measure how far away from
the edge of a sheet of plywood the rail of my track saw is especially if I am
cutting along the 8 foot length of the plywood, it is much better to have a
click rule on each end than to run around with a single one.
There is absolutely no way an app is going to be accurate enough for any sort
of good woodworking and I highly doubt you would see a single professional and
sighted woodworker use an app like the Measure app over a tape measure even
though they could probably use it with much better precision in terms of lining
up start and end point. The fact is that if you want to do any sort of
woodworking it will be an expensive hobby.
Lastly, don’t forget the usefulness of
