This happens because you must have Automatic Downloading turned on for apps
on your iPhone. You can turn this on for Apps, Books and Music. It is under
Settings, iTunes and App Store. Check this on your phone and if it is on for
apps you can turn it off and this way if you download an app

In the app store today were two updates. One for Bbc News and the other
for Voxer.
In the Bbc news app you can now get push notifications for breaking
news. From what I am hearing I will get more breaking news than I do on
the Sky News app, which some days I don't get any breaking news at all.
Look in iTunes media, mobile applications. There you will see all the apps you
have backed up. You can also see the version number. I never delete any of
the apps there as if a new version comes out and it isn't accessible, you can
delete it from your phone by doing a double tap and hold.

I personally like the flick-down and tap method for deleting. I'd like to see
it standardized. It could be used for deleting in general such as deleting
apps, deleting contacts, deleting email threads which it already does but it is
a most handy means of a quick delete rather then the rotor.
I think all the in app purchase things in the app store are for all devices

No I do not have any rules setup, when I am in the trash folder and the phone
makes its dinging sound as if a new message were coming in, I go back to the
inbox to check the new arrival nothing's there, I assume its mixed in with the
garbage.

New messages should show up in your in box. A rule or Gmail's spam
filter might send it into another folder though. Have you checked your
spam folder? Do you have multiple accounts set up in your phone's mail
client? If so, have you checked the other in boxes?
