RE: Dictionary app

2015-07-29 Thread Richard Petty
No, in the AH5 text flows pretty much uninterrupted. I believe this is not true
for all versions, but don’t recall where I read that and I have not tried other
versions. I believe some key words are links, but most are not.

I thought hard about the price tag, but also thought about what a new print
version would cost.

I just read the description in the app store. It looks impressive at $24.99.

One question, in the description it talks about interlinking of words, or
something like that. Does it read well with VoiceOver, or does it say "link"
after most of the words?

Thanks,

Richard

I haven't tried this personally, but there's a VO setting called "always speak
notifications". Have you tried turning that off? It's in Settings > General >

apologies if you've already gotten this suggestion.

Re: Dictionary app

2015-07-29 Thread Michael Feir
I use one called Wordweb. It's free and works well with Voiceover.
Also, if you have Voice Dream Writer, it has a good
dictionary/thesaurus built in. What I'd love to find is a good
accessible encyclopedia app. Any thoughts there?

Re: Dictionary app

2015-07-29 Thread Richard Turner
I just read the description in the app store. It looks impressive at $24.99.
One question, in the description it talks about interlinking of words, or
something like that. Does it read well with VoiceOver, or does it say "link"
after most of the words?
Thanks,
Richard

I like the dictionary app called Lexicon.

It seems simple to use and VO friendly. I think it is free but I got it last
year so I may be mistaken about the cost.

Of course Amazon still yet does not have any described video. Pretty pathetic

New playlists a nightmare with latest iTunes using latest JFW16

2015-07-29 Thread Don & Cher
In iTunes on the PC, attempting to create a new playlist in latest iTunes:

.shows previously hidden artwork

.I cannot select songs- so cannot copy, or rearrange order- so must add
songs in the exact order desired

.the 'edit playlist' buttons deselect the playlist and reverts to entire
music library (you are instructed to use this button to add songs to a
playlist)

My old playlists are unaffected- I can select, copy, delete and rearrange as
before. Anyone else seeing this?

Forget what I said about transferring my library from one computer to another

2015-07-29 Thread Neal Ewers
OK, You live and you learn.
So, a person at Apple said that I should simply copy my iTunes folder from
my old computer to an external drive. I should then go to my new computer
and use the file menu option to add a folder to my library and in this way,
add the folder from my external drive to iTunes on my new computer.

Well, I did that, and all looked well. All my apps showed up on my computer.
As I said in the past, I don't have a lot of music and I was not worried
about that. However, this mporning, just for the heck of it, I looked at the
file size of my new iTunes library and discovered that it was nowhere near
as large as my library on my external drive. That made me wonder about
something. So, I called Apple again and he basically said what I had figured
out by that point. The Apps were there in name only, but only as pointers.
It did not actually copy the apps themselves. I think someone on this list
had a question about this. It appears you were right.

So, what I have now done, and what was suggested by this Apple technician,
was to close iTunes. Then move my iTunes folder on my Windows 10 computer
someplace else in case I needed it, and then Copy the iTunes folder from my
external drive to the right folder on my Windows 10 computer.

It worked. I also feel much more confident that the apps are actually there
and not just pointers.

So, if this helps someone, I will be glad. I am guessing music may be a
different story if it is stored in places on your computer other than where
iTunes would put it, but I will let smarter minds than mine worry about
that.

Neal

Can't set up allowance for self

2015-07-29 Thread Traci Duncan
Lol! Just tried an experiment, which failed! The part of family sharing that
bugs me is using 1 payment method. I wanted to see if I could dance around
this by setting up my own allowance… FYI, that is not possible.

The simplest solution I have come up with so far, is buying iTunes gift cards
via paypal digital store. I can then load these onto my account, by which
creating my own, separate payment. A bit of a pain, but doable.

HTH, Traci

PS. Apple could take a lesson from Amazon, which allows you to create a family
shared library, 2 adults & something like 4 children. The 2 adults can have
separate payments.

Re: Search of audible library turns up nothing

2015-07-29 Thread Mary Otten
Well, for whatever reason, I have found that if I search on just the authors
last name, not the whole name, I do get results. I know I'm spelling the name
correctly, as I did doublecheck. So I have no idea why the full name gives zero
well the last name gives me the results I want. But there it is.

Re: Search of audible library turns up nothing

2015-07-29 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Perhaps there is a difference in the apps for the iPad and iPhone, so the
following comments won't be of any use to you. I tried it on an iPhone 6,
running 8.4. When I tapped the search button, and typed in what I wanted to
find, I noticed that I did not have to hit any search button for it to find
my search. I touched in the top left corner of the screen, found the search
string, and swiped right, past the clear text button, and my result were
there. I suppose I could have tapped on any of them to start a download.
I did find a blank that said no results found, but that seemed to be
associated with the more titles like this feature.

Yes, I remove the app from the app switcher. Then I signed out of the app
and back into the app. All searches yield the same zero result even though
as I said, when I scroll through the screen my library seems to be there in
all it's long, long, long glory.

I have a very extensive Audible library. I just tried searching for an

was searching in the cloud in my library. I am using the latest audible

Subject: Face time help needed

I am teaching my wife the basics of IOS 8.4 on an iPhone 4S which she recently
acquired. I have set up everything including wi fi and her own apple identity
and password, everything except activating the phone. So I want to get her set
up on face time since several other family members have either iPhones or
iPads. But I seem to be missing a step. I went into settings and made sure
that face time was on. I then put four persons in the contacts list, three of
whom have iPhones and one who has an iPad. So I put the email address in for
the iPad user and the phone numbers for the others.

But now when I go into face time and select one of the names, I am told that it
needs to be activated. Unfortunately, I do not understand the significance of
this message since face time is turned on in the settings. What am I missing?

Thanks.
