Philips Hue Lighting app

2016-07-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

Has anybody bought into the Philips Hue lighting system and used the app? I am
trying to find out if it is Voiceover accessible.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: A new person that got the KNFBf reader

2016-07-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Simon,

If you double tap on the field of view report button it will tell you
information about how many edges of the page KNFB Reader can see and how skewed
your phone is compared to the text. This will be provided in how many degrees
off you are either clockwise or counterclockwise. Sorry, but I am running the
Ios 10 Public beta and KNFB Reader currently doesn't work with that so I can't
give you examples as to what specific wording is used.
There is also an option to turn on tilt guidance and if you have it on your
phone will vibrate if you are not holding it flat. You can try/practice this by
putting the phone on a level table. It should not vibrate. Now pick up your
phone and try to keep it level/flat. If as you lift it up it starts to vibrate
you know that you are not holding it flat any more. You can then try to
compensate and see if you can hold it so it stops vibrating.

Sieghard

Re: the u-verse apps

I find the At Uverse app to be very accessible. I can view, schedule
and delete recordings. Watching live tv is also really easy. Haven't
played with the on demand stuff, but given the layout of everything else
I would think that it would work well.

RS Games on the IPhone

2016-07-30 Thread Blind Treasures {Your One Stop Shop}
I downloaded the new RS Games app onto my IPhone 6s and am having a couple
issues that I'm wondering if it is just me. Firstly, whenever I send a chat
message the background music goes away. Secondly, the speech will go away in
the middle of a game and I will have to dump the game and go back in. This
happens quite often. I tried unloading voiceover and just use the built in
speech but does the same thing. This happens with both the Alex voice and
any of the others. Is anyone else finding these bugs as well?

RE: Voice Dream and audio files

2016-07-30 Thread Richard Turner
Put them in a Zip file with the name of what you want the book name to show up
in Voice Dream as.

Also, make sure the files are named in such a way that they will be in order
when unzipped.

Put that zip file on DropBox or somewhere that Voice Dream can access.
Then, use the Add feature in Voice Dream and select that zip file.
Thn, each file will be treated as a chapter in that book.

Re: How do I delete multiple photos?

2016-07-30 Thread englishrider91
If you go into the photos app, there's a tab called albums. Double-tap on that,
and then on the album called Camera Roll. In the upper right-hand corner,
there'll be a button called Select. Double-tap on that, and then double-tap
each photo you want to delete. There's a delete button at the bottom of the
screen. Not sure if a confermation will come up, but even if one doesn't,
there's an album called recently deleted, which will let you recover deleted
photos. Not sure how long they hang around in that album before being deleted
permanently, though. There doesn't seem to be a way to select all the photos in
one album and have them deleted, so you'll have to tap on each one to selected.
It's at least a little bit less tedious than doing the swipe up and double-tap
to delete, though, as you can just run your finger down the screen, and do a
split-tap to select each photo.

Thanks,
Ari

Hi All,

I am currently using iOS 8.1.1 on an iPhone 6. I have no issues on this
version, and generally I am of the mind that if it ain't broken, don't fix it.
(especially since we've seen over recent years that iOS updates often introduce
bugs with voiceover). But, having said that, I am considering updating to 9.2
because I understand that you can connect USB devices to your phone.

I have read about a couple potential issues with version 9 though that have me
a bit concerned.

1. Someone reported that backups to iCloud still don't finish on 9.2. He is
using an iPhone 6.

2. Some have reported issues with the Samantha voice. i.e, hitting space bar
inserts a period. Also the voice is harder to understand than in version 8.
However, I'm not even sure if I'm using Samantha. I remember the phone had Alex
when I first purchased it, but I prefer the female voice I had before with iOS
7, so I switched to the high quality female voice that most closely resembles
it. But when I go to check the voice I have, I see that it says Alex is
selected as default.

3. A few people reported their phone more sluggish after going to version 9
from 8, and that it continues in 9.2. Its possible that they are using older
phones, I'm not sure since they didn't say.

Have people noticed these issues? Again I'm using an iPhone 6.

Thanks,
Sarah

RE: iOS 9.2

2016-07-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sarah,

I will comment on some of your questions. First, I am not sure what you were
told regarding connecting USB devices. Can you give an example? It certainly is
not possible to simply connect a USB device such as a USB hard drive, USB stick
etc. There are some USB sticks available which have a Lightning port on one end
and a regular USB connector on the other end to plug them into a computer, but
these work only inside their own apps.

As for sluggishness, I would say that if somebody’s phone is more sluggish with
the most current iOS 9 version which is 9.3.3, that the reason is not iOS but
simply too few resources or other problems. In fact, iOS 9 has been optimized
much more than iOS 8 and in general terms I think even people who have the 4S
experience better performance. If you just go ahead and upgrade when maybe you
haven’t rebooted your phone in 6 months and you have 30 apps sitting in the app
switcher I can see how there is a potential for issues. Apple may not
officially recommend this, but definitely closing out all apps in the apps
switcher and turning the phone off and back on is a wise precaution. I follow
the advice of Rob from the Today in iOS Podcast and always do a Reset Network
Settings which can be found in Settings > General > Reset. This will also
reboot the phone but also clear all network and radio settings. The only thing
you have to do after the phone reboots is to reconnect to your Wi-Fi and to
name your phone if you want it called anything other than “iPhone”. This can be
easily done in Settings > General > About.
I also recommend upgrading via iTunes for major upgrades, it gives you more
feedback and also won’t require as much space on your phone. Of course backing
up your phone before the update is a good idea, iCloud backup or, even better,
an encrypted iTunes backup.

I have no issues with iCloud backups not completing and never have in any
version of iOS 9.

There is probably something to the Samantha voice thing, not so much in how she
reads stuff, but for example a capital “B” is pronounced very strangely.

Lastly, if you are happy with how your phone works now, you may even want to
wait another 6 weeks since by then iOS 10 will be out or almost out. I heard
today that rumours are the new iPhones will start shipping on Friday, September
16. This means preorders start a week before on Friday, September 9 and since
Monday, September 5 is Labour Day, the keynote when the new phones are
introduced will most likely be on Tuesday, September 6. The new iOS is usually
released to the public on the Wednesday before the iPhones ship/are available
for sale so that would be Wednesday, September 14 which is 6 weeks from next
Wednesday.

Also keep in mind that with each iOS release Apple does fix security issues and
vulnerabilities which have been identified so in my opinion upgrading is not
only a matter of new features, but also one of security.

Sieghard

RE: Android tablet accessibility may be better than you think [was "Re: Questions regarding the IPod"]

You should have added “In my opinion”
Anyhow, since this is an iOS list and not an Android or general list I think we
can put this to rest, I think most people by now realize the Android
accessibility has come a long way and depending on the user may be a good
alternative to iOS.

Current Android 7 and TalkBack 5 accessibility user experience matches iOS 10
VoiceOVEr in most areas and exceeds in other areas.
I'll agree that earlier Android accessibility was sub-optimal and had a lot to
be desired, but I'd encourage screen reader users to try modern Android
TalkBack. You'll be pleasantly surprised, but to be fair it is difficult to let
go of legacy experiences one may have.

For audio books and movies, I would also recommend dropbox to help free up

iOS 9.2

2016-07-30 Thread Sarah Clark

He is
using an iPhone 6.

Thanks,
Sarah

yes, that is what i meant.

I thought sieghard, was saying, that this could be done.

I wish it could be, as i can't stand the screen being in two halfs.

it still confuses me, even after having the iPad mini second gen,
 for nearly
 2 years.

I am not quite sure, why apple did it this way.

But thank you, for letting me know.

It let's you play bagpipes on your device.
There's a keypad in the middle of the screen and you put your fingers on it
to make the notes. One finger will make some notes, two fingers together
makes other notes.
You have the option of just letting the drone play automatically when you
touch the screen, or you can set it so that you have to blow into the
microphone to keep the drone going.
You need to turn Voice-Over off to make it work.

Re: Questions regarding the iPad mini

2016-07-30 Thread Evan Reese

It let's you play bagpipes on your device.
There's a keypad in the middle of the screen and you put your fingers on it
to make the notes. One finger will make some notes, two fingers together
makes other notes.
You have the option of just letting the drone play automatically when you
touch the screen, or you can set it so that you have to blow into the
microphone to keep the drone going.

You need to turn Voice-Over off to make it work.

The first app I installed on my iPad Mini was the Airpipes Bagpipes app. It
has a full screen mode, which makes it easier to play.

Sieghard,

On my iPad I have often seen a button that says something like "full
screen mode." I believe this button will get rid of the split screen in
apps where it's a feature. I personally have never tried it because I like
the split screen in apps like settings and mail. It did take some getting
used to, but now I quite like having the extra info that the larger screen
allows.

I have mine locked into portrait mode. I always use portrait mode

Apple did it that way because they had enough room to do it that way,
and it makes a lot of sense for sighted people. There is all that
real estate there. Why just have all that vacant space and just a little
bit of info?
It makes no sense from AUI point especially if you can see.

Re: Questions regarding the IPod

2016-07-30 Thread Russ Kiehne

Here is a lot more info on this app:

LibriVox Audio Books Pro provides free access to over 15,000 audiobooks and
thousands of radio dramas with no ads. Each audiobook can be streamed over
the internet or downloaded for later use.

Audiobooks from LibriVox are free thanks to the dedicated work of hundreds
of volunteers who record, edit and distribute the books. New releases are
prepared daily, and the entire catalog spans the breadth of world
literature, including novels, history, biography, short stories, poetry and
more in both fiction and non-fiction.

The LibriVox Audio Books app makes it easy to search for free audio books,
as well as classic radio dramas. You can browse by title, author or genre,
look at new recordings, or search by keyword. Because the books are free,
you can listen to as much or as little of a book as you like with no cost.
The app remembers your position, so when you return to a book later, you can
start listening at the place where you left off, and includes a sleep timer
for your convenience.

You are certainly right about the iPad mini and the battery life. With
the screen off, it really does last a long time. It certainly does sound
better then the touch, but you know, I don't think it sounds any better
than my iPhone. That is kind of strange, since it does, nominally, have
stereo speakers. I'm not familiar with that other audible book reading

selection and price? Can you get books as inexpensively and are there
mostly duplicates with audible? I have been pretty happy with audible,

2016-07-30 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
sparkpeople is an app which lets you track food and exercise plus a whole lot
more stuff. It’s a companion to the sparkpeople.com
or .ca web site, of which you have to be a member to use. It’s free to join.

I am also in Canada and I have the app, so not sure why you couldn’t find it,
Sean. Try typing “sparkpeople”, with no space between spark and people and see
if that works.

As far as I know the ads are what help make the app and the site free, so
that’s why they are there. No way to remove them. I don’t find them annoying
or in the way, but perhaps I’m just used to them or something. I am also
totally blind, so that might also be why. Not sure how obtrusive they are if
you are partially sighted.

hth,
Cait

Have you used the search field? Put in your destination and enter, then I
believe you choose "directions to here". Then another edit field will show.
Enter your other address then click route. there will be a button between that
says switch. this is how you reverse the route.

Hi. That's what I have... "Transit" but I thought it was also called "hop
stop?" What I can't figure out is how it will give me reverse routs. Meaning...
When I check bus arrivals or departure, it still gives me the rout as if I was
coming home from work, not going to work.

Has anyone used this ap? Will it tell you bus stops as you are passing them?
I know blind square will... But what is the difference between the ap hopstop
and blind square for public transportation? Just curious.

Re: Voice dream reader cutting out

2016-07-30 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!
I also didn't have any issues with reading since 4.0 came out.
i use iOS built in voice and read the books in docx or txt format.
However, this was happening to me and it still happens on the old
iPod Touch 4G running iOS 6.x.x with Acapela voice. Winston never
solved this issue although I wrote to him several times about it, as
well as the iPod Touch 5G battery drain.

But I suppose if enough of us do experience problem and right, maybe he will be able to figure it out. It's good to know it isn't just the one voice having this problem.

I think it either has something to do with the updated voices or the 4.0 update to VDR itself. The issue is very frustrating, to say the least" Maybe we should try writing Winston to see if he knows about the issue.

I am sending this to two lists, because I know there are some on the Mac list who use I-devices and are not subscribed to the iPhone list. I have recently noticed that voice dream reader will sometimes cut out when I am reading a book from book share. I thought at first that there was a problem with my iPad mini, which is usually where I do my reading. So I switched to my iPhone 6s, and discovered that the problem was also happening there. I really can't find a pattern, except that it seems to occur most often when I have moved around within a book. But that is not always true. I have found this problem while using the Kendra voice, which is when I have been using lately due to the type of material I have been reading. So I don't know if it is just that voice or something more. I never had a problem with that boys until recently. This problem may be associated with the recent update to iOS 9. But that was such a small update that that seems hard to believe. Anyway, I am curious if a
ny other voice dream users have noticed this issue where the voice while you were reading just cuts out for a while and then comes back in a different place in the book. It's like it started rewind or fast-forward a bit.

 hi Jennie,

yes, that is what i meant.

I think, that i will just stick with iPhones, in the future.

 Take care,

 Dave.
