Personally, I've not had any trouble with the section index. However, if it is not working correctly for you then you can accomplish the same thing using the search feature in contacts. Just double tap it and put the first one or two letters in and you should see results associated with those

First make sure your bluetooth device is powered on and connected. Next go to settings and bluetooth. Next choose more info for the device that you want to rename. Next choose name and then type in the name. Then choose done. Here is a link to an article that explains this.
