RE: iPhones can now tell blind users where and how far away people are

2020-10-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Forget it, I want at least Geordi La Forge's visor if not his ocular
prosthetics, a silly iPhone 12 Pro won't cut it.
And for those who are not Star Trek fans, Geordi is one of the main characters
in Start Trek The Next Generation, he was blind from birth, but became Chief
Engineer on the Enterprise under Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Hi! This sounds quite promising! What is everybody’s view on its practical use
for us?

The lidar in the iPhone 12 Pro shows up in this infrared video. Each dot
reports back the precise distance of what it reflects off of.

First, it tells the user whether there are people in view at all. If someone is
there, it will then say how far away the closest person is in feet or meters,
updating regularly as they approach or move further away. The sound corresponds
in stereo to the direction the person is in the camera’s view.

Second, it allows the user to set tones corresponding to certain distances. For
example, if they set the distance at six feet, they’ll hear one tone if a
person is more than six feet away, another if they’re inside that range. After
all, not everyone wants a constant feed of exact distances if all they care
about is staying two paces away.

The third feature, perhaps extra useful for folks who have both visual and
hearing impairments, is a haptic pulse that goes faster as a person gets closer.

Last is a visual feature for people who need a little help discerning the world
around them, an arrow that points to the detected person on the screen.
Blindness is a spectrum, after all, and any number of vision problems could
make a person want a bit of help in that regard.

I always liked to choose faces that allow for a decent amount of complications.
Some faces do not have any complications. And I like weather apps like Dark sky
and of course I keep the battery status and the Workout app on my face.
I had a Series Two which is similar to the Series Three. Now I have a Series
six.
I half expect apple to figure out how to put a thermometer in the next Series.
Laughs!

RE: iTunes for Windows 7, on a 32-bit PC, anyone?

2020-10-30 Thread Alan Lemly
Mark,

I don't know whether the latest iTunes for Windows version will run on a 32-bit
system but I'd recommend you execute your Windows 7 Start button and type Apple
Software update in the box and see what it offers you. That's how I've gotten
past iTunes versions on my Windows 7 64-bit system when I had trouble getting
them from the Microsoft Store.

Good luck.

Subject: iTunes for Windows 7, on a 32-bit PC, anyone?

Hello Everyone,

Okay, up until now, I have continued to use my old Windows 7, 32-bit Desktop as
my primary iTunes Library manager.

As a result, I have iTunes 12.6.5.x on a Windows 7 PC. As you may recall, once
upon a time, this version allowed one to access the app store.

While it continues to allow one to access the App Store, it no longer supports
device backup on anything running iOS 13 or later.

So, reluctantly, given that it would appear that Apple's decision to remove the
app store from iTunes is permanent; and given that I would, once again, prefer
to have actual iTunes backups of my devices, I have decided to upgrade iTunes
12.6.x to the latest version of iTunes.

So, I went to apple.com/itunes and, to my surprise, there does not appear to be
a 32-bit version of iTunes 12.7 available.

Have I waited too long to update?

The only older versions of iTunes I can find on that particular site are
versions older than 12.6 and all appear to be 64-bit only.

So, I have two questions:

1.
What is the latest version of iTunes for Windows? Keep in mind that I do not
have access to the Microsoft store on a Windows 7, 32-bit PC.

2.
Does anyone know from where I may download the latest 32-bit version of iTunes
for Windows 7? Is anyone running a version of iTunes for Windows that allows
for backing up iOS / iPad OS running versions of the operating system that are
at least 13.x or higher, that was not downloaded from the Microsoft Store?

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

versions older than 12.6 and all appear to be 64-bit only.

So, I have two questions:

1.
What is the latest version of iTunes for Windows? Keep in mind that I do
not have access to the Microsoft store on a Windows 7, 32-bit PC.

2.
Does anyone know from where I may download the latest 32-bit version of
iTunes for Windows 7? Is anyone running a version of iTunes for Windows
that allows for backing up iOS / iPad OS running versions of the operating
system that are at least 13.x or higher, that was not downloaded from the
Microsoft Store?

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

RE: Setting up an Apple Watch series 3

2020-10-30 Thread Mervin Keck
I always liked to choose faces that allow for a decent amount of complications.
Some faces do not have any complications. And I like weather apps like Dark sky
and of course I keep the battery status and the Workout app on my face.
I had a Series Two which is similar to the Series Three. Now I have a Series
six.
I half expect apple to figure out how to put a thermometer in the next Series.
Laughs!

Tribit MaxSound Plus Portable Bluetooth Speaker user manual and other details

2020-10-30 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

As I said earlier today, this email includes download links for the Tribit
MaxSound Plus Portable Bluetooth speaker user manual and some more details
from my experience of setting it up today. I wrote Tribit Audio Support late
last night at supp...@tribitaudio.com and requested the user manual for this
speaker in electronic PDF format. They sent it quickly and I received it
this morning. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, the manual was an
image file. I have a subscription with Adobe Acrobat and used that service
to convert the user manual to Microsoft Word docx format. I edited the
converted file in a couple of places to clean up conversion errors and here
is a Dropbox download link to it:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/x9vlyza1849g6wr/Tribit%20MaxSound%20Plus%20Speaker
%20User%20manual-2020-8-4.docx?dl=1

This speaker charges via a micro USB connection. This connection is on the
back left side of the speaker under a rubber flap. The flap is to provide
water protection and can be opened by lifting up on its right edge. Under
the flap on the left is the 3.5mm auxiliary in port. On the right is the
micro USB port. The micro USB cable plug connects to this port for charging
with its two bumps facedown. The power indicator light was red when I
plugged my in and it took about three and a half hours to be fully charged.

I have created an Excel file which contains three tables of user manual
information. The first table has the locations, names, and functions of the
six buttons on top of the speaker. The second table has the number of button
presses and the resulting function of the MultiFunction button. The third
table explains the indicator lights and their status meaning. These tables
have defined names so that JAWS will read their column headings and row
titles as you arrow among their cells. If this reading doesn't happen for
you, write back and I'll explain a JAWS setting that can be changed to
enable this row and column heading announcement. Here is a Dropbox download
link to the Excel file:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/moyaf7lpndffe7w/Tribit%20MaxSound%20Plus%20Speaker
%20User%20manual-2020-8-4.xlsx?dl=1

I'm a big believer in providing source reference material so here is a
Dropbox download link to the PDF user manual image file provided by Tribit:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hiitby2r6e7mbdk/Tribit%20MaxSound%20Plus%20Speaker
%20User%20manual-2020-8-4.pdf?dl=1

I'm very pleased with the speaker and think it has an excellent sound for
the $41 it cost. I hope this information is helpful but if you have any
questions, please post back.

RE: What exactly is a widget?

2020-10-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
A widget is something you can place on your home page that will display some
information to you without opening the app. You could see the forecast for the
day with a weather app, or the newest podcast that's shown up with the widget
for your podcast app. Tapping on an widget can also behave differently then
tapping on an app.

All of the widgets I've tried have worked well with VoiceOver. Widgets aren't
as convenient for a blind person as they are for a sighted person, since you
still need to touch the screen and give a widget focus to see what it's telling
you, as opposed to a sighted person, who just has to glance at their screen to
get that information. I still find some widgets useful, but not as many as I do
on Android, where widgets seem a bit more mature to me, and you seem to have so
many more choices. Whether you'll find any widgets useful or not, especially on
one of your home pages, is something that only you'll be able to decide for
yourself.

In IOS 14, you have the option to add a widget to any home screen. They seem to
always take up a two by two grid, so you have to give up the real estate of
four app icons for one widget. The today screen, which is the screen to the
left of your first home page, has always been made up of widgets. The
difference in IOS 14 is that you can now place widgets on any home page. I
suspect that what you're calling your main home page is the today screen.

Re: What exactly is a wigit?

2020-10-30 Thread 'Simon Wong' via VIPhone

Hi here's how someone described it to me, hope its clear.
A widget is a small icon that you place on your home page to get the
information you need that updates all the time. For instance, I have my
calendar widget and my weather widget on my home screen so I can flick to
either widget and get real time information. My weather one gives me the
current temperature as well as the high and low. My calendar gives me my
next event. If I need more detail, I can double tap on the widget and it
opens the app. Very practical for things you check quite often. Note that
not all apps yet have a widget but they will come soon. I am thinking of
putting my Parcel widget there so I can track my parcels location in real
time. The thing you have to remember is that adding widgets to your home
screen will need space so they will push the apps at the bottom of your
screen to the next page.

I'm not sure why pinned is placed before delete, but it doesn't bother me now.
Flicking down twice has just become automatic for me. I'm thinking we need to
have a way configure the order of the actions in the action list.

an Amazon Kindle book. I seem to remember JAWS not doing well with
such books a while back, but I don’t know if it has improved. What
about on the iPhone? Is that any better?

If anyone has any advice on how to best read this eBook, please
share your ideas.

Thanks much.

Jim

RE: What is “PIN“ In Messages

2020-10-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure why pinned is placed before delete, but it doesn't bother me now.
Flicking down twice has just become automatic for me. I'm thinking we need to
have a way configure the order of the actions in the action list.

message will always come on top.

Yes. It’s a spaceship game. It was first in Italian and then translated to

Hello,

Recently I have had a notification that says A new iOS update is now available.
Please update from the iOS 14 beta. I have the beta profile installed and have
uninstalled it. However, I receive this notification repeatedly.

With the beta profile removed and the device restarted I check for updates and
I’m told my software is up to date.

Has anyone else experienced this and have you managed to suppress this
notification? Thanks.

RE: question where to go to set the volume buttens for use with the camra?

2020-10-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The only setting you can turn on or off is to use the volume up button for
burst photos, this is where the camera takes a bunch of shots super fast and
this is in Settings > Camera.
If thevolume buttons don't work then that is probably because of the app you
are using, they work in the Camera app.

Hi all. I was trying to take a picture today with my phone and when I was in
google hangouts and tried to go to the camra app and use the volume up and down
buttens to take a picture it didn’t seem to work I still had to navigate with
my finger to hit the take picture butten. Can soe one please let me kow where
to go to make the volume buttens work for taking pictures? I have the buttens
turned on to setthe volume for the ringer and alerts and to change it with
buttens but maybe that is not the right place. I am using a I phone 8 with the
latest ios update. Many thanks. From Mich.

A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta.

2020-10-30 Thread Malcolm Parfitt

Thanks.

IFTT

2020-10-30 Thread Joe Orozco
Hi,

Does anyone have experience using IFTT? I’m trying to figure out if
their current promotion is worth it. Thanks for any information.

Joe

question where to go to set the volume buttens for use with the camra?

2020-10-30 Thread Mich Verrier
Hi all. I was trying to take a picture today with my phone and when I was in
google hangouts and tried to go to the camra app and use the volume up and
down buttens to take a picture it didn't seem to work I still had to
navigate with my finger to hit the take picture butten. Can soe one please
let me kow where to go to make the volume buttens work for taking pictures?
I have the buttens turned on to setthe volume for the ringer and alerts and
to change it with buttens but maybe that is not the right place. I am using
a I phone 8 with the latest ios update. Many thanks. From Mich.
