New iPad owner with questions

2023-03-22 Thread Wayne Merritt
Hi. I bought an iPad Air 5th Generation today. I have been using VoiceOver for
many years on the iPhone, but don't have much mileage on the iPad. I think my
main question so far is this. I know that one's VoiceOver and other settings
migrate between devices and iCloud. While this is good on paper, is it possible
to make settings changes on the iPad that are different from the settings I
have on my iPhone? An example is the screen orientation. I have it set to
portrait on my phone, but want to experiment with landscape on the iPad with
the larger screen.

Kind regards,

Subject: Getting started with Blind Square

Hi,

I just downloaded Blind Square and am a little overwhelmed by all the options.
I have a couple of questions that hopefully will get me started.

When I decided to get Blind Square I thought it would work in a similar way to
Apple Maps or Good Maps Outdoors. After reading some of the manual, it seems
that Blind Square works in conjunction with Apple Maps and not in place of it.
So, what do I need to do to use them together?

Second, I bought Blind Square because I want to explore routes and destinations
starting from a location different than my actual location. My wife and I are
buying a house in a different town. I’d like to figure out what businesses are
in the area of our new house. I’d like to figure out the location of
particular types of businesses such as drug stores or florists (our anniversary
is coming soon) to know which I can reach by walking or by public
transportation.

Any pointers to get me started would be much appreciated.

Ralph

Hi And, since you already have blindsquare, you may not need it. However, what
I like about it is that as you are walking down the road, it will tell you the
house numbers as you pass. Only the house numbers. Then, if you change streets,
it will tell you the new street, And then the address is only just the numbers.
It doesn’t babble a lot. It does not do turn by turn directions, it just helps
you keep track of where you are and what street you’re crossing.

Re: Looking for accessible GPS App

2023-03-22 Thread doug parisian
There are so many GPS items which are accessible depending on the
features you want or need. Apple maps and Google are two free ones.

Damn, $4/$5 ain't a whole pot of money; lunch is likely more expensive,
or most drinks at a bar, and don't even mention cigarettes and
government sponsored weed!

Hi Terri. Like I mentioned in another post, I recommend “Ariadne GPS.” You

Hello everyone,

I was wondering, is there an accessible GPS App that I could use with my iPhone?

It doesn't matter so much if it is free, or if I have to pay for it.

I am looking for something that can show me what is around.

But also, a way to know where possible sidewalks are. But I am uncertain as to
whether or not such a thing exists.

I am wanting to be able to walk to the rec center that is only about a 4th of a
mile from my home.

However, I don't know if this is even possible.

Any thoughts, or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thank you,

GPS Apps That Will Announce Street Names

2023-03-22 Thread lynda.ingraham
Hellow Everyone,

I am beginning home training Monday with my new guide. I am interested in a
gPS app that will just read the street names as I walk. Due to health
issues, I have forgotten street names, but still know the route. I have my
phone paired with my hearing aids. It would be really great if the app
provided information regarding whether an intersection has lights or stop
signs.

Thank you in advance,

Lynda

Hi Terri. Like I mentioned in another post, I recommend “Ariadne GPS.” You
will have to use sighted assistance to set up the original route but you can
add Points of Interest along the way that mark cross walks, streets, doors,
beginnings of sidewalks and anything else that fits your fancy. When sidewalks
don’t line up properly, it’s easy to mark locations on both sides of the

Re: Accessible GPS apps and bread crumbs

2023-03-22 Thread Thom Spittle
Yes, I was talking about your post. I just checked in the App Store, and it was
there. Several years ago, it was not in the App Store, and they did not update
the app when Apple made a shift to the 64-bit programs. But all I had to do is
re-download, and my points of interest were there. At least a couple of them
were. Thanks for letting me know about this. I think it will be a great
replacement for Soundscape.

Chris,

How long does the battery on the newer rechargeable one last? Also, how do you
know when it is running low?

Hi. I found an old Bluetooth keyboard, which must be from around 2010. Does
anyone recall which button turns it on? This was the Bluetooth keyboard which
took I think 2 AA batteries, so we're going back a ways. Also, does anyone know
how I might know if it is on? I am totally blind.

one thing very well; direct you to a point of interest you have entered.
Initially you do not need the internet or a maps application. It will give you
direction an distance to a POI no matter where you are in the world. I believe
it costs around $20.

RE: Getting started with Blind Square

2023-03-22 Thread Richard Turner
BlindSquare is not a turn-by-turn navigation app, as you have figured out.

Yu an search for a business or address, and once found, you will find an option
to begin a route, then you will have a choice of which navigation app to use.

You can leave BlindSquare running in the background when the other app, Google
or Apple, takes over and blindsquare will continue giving you updates. That
can get a little busy.

As for exploring an area, search for the address of your new house, then keep
flicking through the options to Simulate This Location.

Once you start the simulation, you can use the various categories to explore
what is around yu.

It takes some patience and trial and error, but works quite well.

Note, the data may or not be up to date. Sometimes businesses go out or change
names and the digital map takes a long time to get updated.

Enjoy,

Ralph
