 Subject: iOS keyboard questions

 Hello,
I received my iOS tablet yesterday.
My keyboard works quite well, except for a few minor things. One, the
commands VO+home and VO+end appear to do nothing. Are these commands simply
unsupported or do I need to use a different command to achieve the same
result? Two, when jumping to the menubar with VO+m, how do I get back?
Pressing escape does not close the menubar but instead presses the
application back button. Three, how do I set the keyboard focus to follow
the VO curser, so that when I move the VO curser to an edit field I can just
 start typing?

 Thanks,
 Bill

The Logitech K811 is just as nice as the Apple Wireless keyboard and it has
a nice low-profile slider switch on the right side which would never turn on
by accident. I think the issue with the Apple Wireless keyboard is not that
it looses battery since the battery lasts forever anyways, but if it does
turn on in a pack then also buttons get pressed so then I have to turn
Bluetooth off on the phone in order for my phone not to do stuff all the
time and of course that doesn't work so good if I am using a Bluetooth
 headset.

I guess Apple does not necessarily consider the Apple Wireless keyboard to
be something people bring along, maybe you should send this to
accessibil...@apple.com so maybe in a future version of the keyboard they
get rid of the push button.

I like how it felt to type on the Apple Wireless Keyboard, but it's one
drawback for me, and it was a big one, is that it turned on with the press
of a button, not a switch.
This was a problem for me, as it meant that the keyboard kept getting turned
on in my bag, thus losing lots of vattery life.

 Thanks,

ePub is an eBook format so I assume it's a pub file which means somebody
used Microsoft Publisher to make the flyer. If this is the case you'd
probably be best off asking that person to send you the information in plain
text, as Richard pointed out, Publisher files are graphical by nature and
the best you could do if you have Microsoft Publisher on your computer as
part of the Office suite would be to print it out and scan it or, if you
have Openbook, you could send it straight to the Freedom Import printer
which basically means you are sending the file straight to Openbook.
However, you still would need Microsoft Publisher on your computer to open
the file in the first place.

Ring Central, by the way, is a VoIP telephone app but I assume if you have
and use Ring Central you know that.

PUB files are graphic files so are not readable by screen readers.

slightly OT : iOS simple filesystem management

2014-05-03 Thread Bill Dengler
Hello,
On my Android devices, it is rather simple to download and save files to the
filesystem, create directories, etc. So, my question is this :
1 - how do I download files locally in iOS?
2 - how do I manipulate the filesystem? How do I create directories, move files
around, etc? In other words, what type of file manager/explorer programs exist
and how accessible are they with VO?
3 - I know that when I jailbreak an iOS device, I am able to install an ssh
server and sftp files anywhere on the device as the root user. In Android, I
can elevate an application to root privileges. How does one do this in iOS, and
do I need to be jailbroken first?

Thanks,
Bill

configuring VO to work with Google services?

2014-05-03 Thread Bill Dengler
Hello,
With the Google Hangouts app in iOS, swipe gestures fail to register, and
exploration only works to a degree. Also, VO fails to announce many button
labels. This problem happens both on a 4S and 5S running iOS 7.1/7.1.1. I am
not making any configuration changes to the app or VO which is probably what's
up. The service/app works beautifully both on Android and Chrome/ChromeVox on
OS X. I am having similar issues with the Google Plus app on iOS, but, again,
not on Android/Chrome. Also, when I was a Glass explorer I had similar problems
with the My Glass app on iOS 7.1 beta, but again, the website worked fine in
Chrome/Chrome Vox. So, my question is, how do I configure VO to best work with
the Google services that I rely so heavily on?

Re: slightly OT : iOS simple filesystem management

2014-05-03 Thread Bill Dengler
Or Google Drive since I already use it for document and file storage because
it's cheaper and integrated with my Google account. Haven't experimented much
with it, does it seem to have the same difficulties as the other Google
services?

On May 3, 2014, at 4:24 PM, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com wrote:

You're thinking about iOS in the context of Android. The two are different,
and take very different approaches to file management. Where Android lets
apps talk freely, access the same file system, and so on, iOS sandboxes them.
Say you have two Daisy players. You can't download one copy of a book and let
both apps open it, each app needs its own copy of the book. There is no
common file storage beyond the music/movie library, which is tightly
 controlled and encrypted.

Consequently, root privileges would do no good, since no app can go outside
of its sandbox no matter what. Each app can manage its own files, but no apps
 can manage common files.

If I need a way to sort random files into folders, I use Dropbox. It's
accessible, free, and syncs over the internet so I can access that same
folder structure online or on any other iOS, Android, OS X, or Windows device
I happen to have. Aside from that, I give each app the file(s) that it makes
sense to give that app, and keep masters on my computer in case I need to use
the files for something else. Apple is pushing for a lack of folder
structure, between iCloud syncing and its use of file tagsin the latest OS X
release, so the lack of a user-accessible file system, aside from being a
huge part of iOS' top-notch security, makes sense from the Apple perspective.

When I saw the battery life listed for the H 17.

I should have gotten the H 19 for the longer battery life.
Since I was spending almost 100.00 anyway.
So I will ask on hear.
 What do you all think?
Would you keep the H 17 or exchange it and get the H 19 text for the 9 hours

 Since I am spending almost 100.00 for the H 17 and 20.00 more the the H 19

I feel that I should have spend the more money and gotten the H 19 text

 Hello Everyone,

The Most Recent Version of A T T Navigator, version 3.2.25, is a

Today, A T T posted the latest version of its GPS software
navigation solution, A T T Navigator version 3.2.25, to the Apple App
 Store.

Regrettably, I must report that, while this completely redesigned GPS
navigation solution offers dazzling new features such as the ability
to, while navigating, send real-time up-to-date estimated times of
arrival (via either email or SMS) to any recipient, the ability to
share POI details with anyone including non-A T T Navigator
travelers, the ability to search for incidental and/or specific POIs
while navigating, etc, it has broken many of the core Navigator
VoiceOver accessible controls such as the ability to use the
groundbreaking A T T Navigator VoiceSearch feature (arguably the
best feature of the app), the ability to review, via VoiceOver of
course, the VoiceSearch results list of points-of-interest (POIs), the
ability to configure the app's settings, and more.

Even worse, with this release, many of the app's basic controls are
either no longer VoiceOver accessible or no longer properly labeled.

Coincidentally, many of the new features, including those listed above
 are completely VoiceOver accessible.

I am posting this here to request your support in my effort to compel
A T T to address these VoiceOver accessibility bugs. You may send
your emails, requesting improved VoiceOver accessibility to:

 Thank you so much.

Re: Please Help Bring VoiceOver Accessibility Back to A T T Navigator

People actually use ATT navigator?

 Hello Everyone,

The Most Recent Version of A T T Navigator, version 3.2.25, is a mixed bag
 of good and bad.

Today, A T T posted the latest version of its GPS software navigation
solution, A T T Navigator version 3.2.25, to the Apple App Store.

Regrettably, I must report that, while this completely redesigned GPS
navigation solution offers dazzling new features such as the ability to,
while navigating, send real-time up-to-date estimated times of arrival (via
either email or SMS) to any recipient, the ability to share POI details with
anyone including non-A T T Navigator travelers, the ability to search for
incidental and/or specific POIs while navigating, etc, it has broken many of
the core Navigator VoiceOver accessible controls such as the ability to use
the groundbreaking A T T Navigator VoiceSearch feature (arguably the best
feature of the app), the ability to review, via VoiceOver of course, the
VoiceSearch results list of points-of-interest (POIs), the ability to
configure the app's settings, and more.

Even worse, with this release, many of the app's basic controls are either
no longer VoiceOver accessible or no longer properly labeled.

Coincidentally, many of the new features, including those listed above are
 completely VoiceOver accessible.

I am posting this here to request your support in my effort to compel A T
T to address these VoiceOver accessibility bugs. You may send your emails,
requesting improved VoiceOver accessibility to: supp...@telenav.com

 Thank you so much.

 Most Sincerely,

 Mark

Re: .ogg files

2014-05-01 Thread Bill Dengler
GNU Wget is a free utility for non-interactive download of files from
the Web. It supports HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP protocols, as well as
   retrieval through HTTP proxies.

Wget is non-interactive, meaning that it can work in the background,
while the user is not logged on. This allows you to start a retrieval
and disconnect from the system, letting Wget finish the work. By
contrast, most of the Web browsers require constant user's presence,
which can be a great hindrance when transferring a lot of data.

Wget can follow links in HTML, XHTML, and CSS pages, to create local
versions of remote web sites, fully recreating the directory structure
of the original site. This is sometimes referred to as recursive
downloading. While doing that, Wget respects the Robot Exclusion
   Standard (_ /_ r_ o_ b_ o_ t_ s_ ._ t_ x_ t). Wget can be instructed to
convert the links in
downloaded files to point at the local files, for offline viewing.

Wget has been designed for robustness over slow or unstable network
connections; if a download fails due to a network problem, it will keep
retrying until the whole file has been retrieved. If the server
supports regetting, it will instruct the server to continue the
download from where it left off.

I am just wondering if something like that exists for ipads.

blind people the larger screen which of course also means a larger phone is
 not that important.

Will it have an improved camera, well, yes, almost certainly. Will it have
Touch Id? Yes, definitely, but apart from that who knows. Speculation is
that maybe Apple will already introduce Sapphire Crystal screens this year
which of course would be awesome, but while the rumours are starting to fly
it is still early. My guess is that the 5S will stick around as the new
low-price 4 inch phone as some rumours claim Apple will release an iPhone 6
 with a 4.7 and a 5.5 inch screen. I, however, could also see a new 4 inch
iPhone 6 and a 4.7 inch model as well as the 5S. Anyhow, maybe once June 2
comes around and we find out about iOS 8 there might be more that can be
deduced about the iPhone 6. I do think, however, that it will be a rewarding
fall for Apple fans with the new Apple TV, new iPhones and maybe even an
iWatch. I could also see that the iPod Touch Fifth Generation gets an update
again as it will be 2 years and of course the iPad, let's see if Apple will
add a 12 or 13 inch iPad Pro to the iPad Air and iPad Mini as well as Touch
 Id.

 Hi,
Alex Hall is right. You really ought to wait; the 5C is not a bad phone,
but it's basically the 5. You would be better off waiting for the 6 (or
whatever they're calling it), as it will have all the features of the 5S
(i.e. TouchID), and a lot more besides.
 Cheers.

Re: Just got the iPhone 5s with ATT and on the next plane and had a question

2014-04-29 Thread Bill Dengler
Here's an even better option.
Straight talk has a $45 plan that gives you unlimited nationwide minutes and
messages and 2.5GB of LTE data on ATT for $45 per month and unlimited
worldwide minutes and messages and 2.5GB of LTE data on ATT for $60 per month.
The 16GB iPhone 5S is $649 off contract($199 on contract). Let's just say your
on contract plan is $120 per month, the length of your service period is 24
months, and you choose the $60 plan if you decide to go off contract.
199+(120*24)=3079
649+(60*24)=2080
3079-2080=999
In other words, save your $1000 and go off contract...

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion. However, consider the
following: My wife just bought a 16 GB iPhone 5C from ATT and signed
up for the Next plan. Like you, she was told that she could pay a
little each month for 18 months, and would own the phone by the end
of that time when she could choose to trade it in for a newer model.
We did the math when we got home and found that though she paid $21 a
month for 18 months for a $99 phone, over that 18 month period she was
actually paying ATT around $380 for a phone who's contract price was
$99. With the Next and similar plans, you are not paying the full off
contract price, but you are giving much more money to the carriers
than you would on a contract. We went back to the ATT store this past
weekend and moved my wife from the Next plan back to a contract, and
then paid the regular $99 price of the 5C. If you have other questions
on the value of the early upgrades plans, do a Google search for Do I
get a better deal on the Next plan from ATT, and you will come up
with many articles from CNet, Ars-Technica, and other sites that break
the numbers down like I have. It is true that not everyone has the
money to pay for the phone outright, and if you choose to go the
direction of the Next plan then that's completely up to you. In order
to switch back from the Next plan you need to make the switch within
14 days after buying your phone, otherwise you are stuck.

 Kind regards,
 Wayne Merritt

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution. It is also called 4G and is faster than
HSPA+(3.5G). The iPhone 5 is the first to have LTE, the 4S only goes up to
HSPA+, and the 4/3GS/3G only go up to 3G. The iPhone 2G only goes up to EDGE.

If you're going to be traveling with the keyboard a lot, I wouldn't get the
Apple one. It's a great keyboard, except that it turns on with the use of a
button, which can easily be pressed. This is unfortunate, especially if you
have the keyboard in a bag which gets bumped a lot, because it might be
turned on often. I would recommend getting a keyboard that uses a physical
 on-off switch.

Pretty much any Bluetooth keyboard you get will work with the iPhone. There
are keyboards that are very very small and pocket-sized, but I don't really
like using these. If I'm going to be using a keyboard, I'm usually going to
be typing for quite a while, so getting something about the size of the
Apple keyboard works well for me. Of course, this is just my own use case,
and yours might very. Personally, I like using dictation or Fleksy VO for
 short things.

iOS SSH/Telnet client?

2014-04-22 Thread Bill Dengler
Hello,
Does anyone know of an SSH client for iOS? Preferably, VoiceOver would read the
output as it was printed to the console. It can be for phone, tablet, or both.

Thanks,
Bill
