My keyboard works quite well, except for a few minor things. One, the commands VO+home and VO+end appear to do nothing. Are these commands simply unsupported or do I need to use a different command to achieve the same result? Two, when jumping to the menubar with VO+m, how do I get back? Pressing escape does not close the menubar but instead presses the application back button. Three, how do I set the keyboard focus to follow the VO curser, so that when I move the VO curser to an edit field I can just start typing? slightly OT : iOS simple filesystem management

How do I create directories, move files around, etc? In other words, what type of file manager/explorer programs exist and how accessible are they with VO? 3 - I know that when I jailbreak an iOS device, I am able to install an ssh server and sftp files anywhere on the device as the root user. In Android, I can elevate an application to root privileges. How does one do this in iOS, and do I need to be jailbroken first? The service/app works beautifully both on Android and Chrome/ChromeVox on OS X. I am having similar issues with the Google Plus app on iOS, but, again, not on Android/Chrome. Also, when I was a Glass explorer I had similar problems with the My Glass app on iOS 7.1 beta, but again, the website worked fine in Chrome/Chrome Vox. So, my question is, how do I configure VO to best work with the Google services that I rely so heavily on? Bill -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: configuring VO to work with Google services?
But the apps read fine on Android/Chrome so I don't think it's an accessibility issue. Re: slightly OT : iOS simple filesystem management
Or Google Drive since I already use it for document and file storage because it's cheaper and integrated with my Google account. Haven't experimented much with it, does it seem to have the same difficulties as the other Google services? Bill On May 3, 2014, at 4:24 PM, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com wrote: You're thinking about iOS in the context of Android. The two are different, and take very different approaches to file management. Where Android lets apps talk freely, access the same file system, and so on, iOS sandboxes them. Say you have two Daisy players. You can't download one copy of a book and let both apps open it, each app needs its own copy of the book. There is no common file storage beyond the music/movie library, which is tightly controlled and encrypted. Consequently, root privileges would do no good, since no app can go outside of its sandbox no matter what. Each app can manage its own files, but no apps can manage common files. If I need a way to sort random files into folders, I use Dropbox. It's accessible, free, and syncs over the internet so I can access that same folder structure online or on any other iOS, Android, OS X, or Windows device I happen to have. Aside from that, I give each app the file(s) that it makes sense to give that app, and keep masters on my computer in case I need to use the files for something else. Apple is pushing for a lack of folder structure, between iCloud syncing and its use of file tagsin the latest OS X release, so the lack of a user-accessible file system, aside from being a huge part of iOS' top-notch security, makes sense from the Apple perspective. On May 3, 2014, at 4:09 PM, Bill Dengler codeofd...@gmail.com wrote: Hello, On my Android devices, it is rather simple to download and save files to the filesystem, create directories, etc. So, my question is this : 1 - how do I download files locally in iOS? 2 - how do I manipulate the filesystem? How do I create directories, move files around, etc? In other words, what type of file manager/explorer programs exist and how accessible are they with VO? 3 - I know that when I jailbreak an iOS device, I am able to install an ssh server and sftp files anywhere on the device as the root user. In Android, I can elevate an application to root privileges. How does one do this in iOS, and do I need to be jailbroken first? Well when I got home I looked it up and from what I Google it said. that the H 17 has five hours of talk time. So I looked up the H 19 and saw that it had 9 hours of talk time. Now I got the H 17 for A little over 80.00. And the H 19 was for 100.00. When I saw the battery life listed for the H 17. That I had just purchased I said to myself. I should have gotten the H 19 for the longer battery life. Since I was spending almost 100.00 anyway. So I will ask on hear. What do you all think? Would you keep the H 17 or exchange it and get the H 19 text for the 9 hours of battery life? Since I am spending almost 100.00 for the H 17 and 20.00 more the the H 19 text? Re: .ogg files
GNU Wget is a free utility for non-interactive download of files from the Web. It supports HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP protocols, as well as retrieval through HTTP proxies. Wget is non-interactive, meaning that it can work in the background, while the user is not logged on. This allows you to start a retrieval and disconnect from the system, letting Wget finish the work. By contrast, most of the Web browsers require constant user's presence, which can be a great hindrance when transferring a lot of data. Wget can follow links in HTML, XHTML, and CSS pages, to create local versions of remote web sites, fully recreating the directory structure of the original site. This is sometimes referred to as recursive downloading. While doing that, Wget respects the Robot Exclusion Standard (_ /_ r_ o_ b_ o_ t_ s_ ._ t_ x_ t). Wget can be instructed to convert the links in downloaded files to point at the local files, for offline viewing. Apple? Big screens? Highly unlikely, then again I'm not saying anything until WWDC. The rest is all speculation, but keep in mind as well that it will almost certainly have a 4.7 inch screen and for many blind people the larger screen which of course also means a larger phone is not that important. Will it have an improved camera, well, yes, almost certainly. Will it have Touch Id? Yes, definitely, but apart from that who knows. Speculation is that maybe Apple will already introduce Sapphire Crystal screens this year which of course would be awesome, but while the rumours are starting to fly it is still early. My guess is that the 5S will stick around as the new low-price 4 inch phone as some rumours claim Apple will release an iPhone 6 with a 4.7 and a 5.5 inch screen. I, however, could also see a new 4 inch iPhone 6 and a 4.7 inch model as well as the 5S. Anyhow, maybe once June 2 comes around and we find out about iOS 8 there might be more that can be deduced about the iPhone 6. I do think, however, that it will be a rewarding fall for Apple fans with the new Apple TV, new iPhones and maybe even an iWatch. I could also see that the iPod Touch Fifth Generation gets an update again as it will be 2 years and of course the iPad, let's see if Apple will add a 12 or 13 inch iPad Pro to the iPad Air and iPad Mini as well as Touch Id. Re: Just got the iPhone 5s with ATT and on the next plane and had a question
Here's an even better option. Straight talk has a $45 plan that gives you unlimited nationwide minutes and messages and 2.5GB of LTE data on ATT for $45 per month and unlimited worldwide minutes and messages and 2.5GB of LTE data on ATT for $60 per month. The 16GB iPhone 5S is $649 off contract($199 on contract). Let's just say your on contract plan is $120 per month, the length of your service period is 24 months, and you choose the $60 plan if you decide to go off contract. 199+(120*24)=3079 649+(60*24)=2080 3079-2080=999 In other words, save your $1000 and go off contract... Bill On Apr 28, 2014, at 9:20 AM, Wayne Merritt wcmerr...@gmail.com wrote: Joseph, You are certainly entitled to your own opinion. However, consider the following: My wife just bought a 16 GB iPhone 5C from ATT and signed up for the Next plan. Like you, she was told that she could pay a little each month for 18 months, and would own the phone by the end of that time when she could choose to trade it in for a newer model. We did the math when we got home and found that though she paid $21 a month for 18 months for a $99 phone, over that 18 month period she was actually paying ATT around $380 for a phone who's contract price was $99. With the Next and similar plans, you are not paying the full off contract price, but you are giving much more money to the carriers than you would on a contract. We went back to the ATT store this past weekend and moved my wife from the Next plan back to a contract, and then paid the regular $99 price of the 5C. If you have other questions on the value of the early upgrades plans, do a Google search for Do I get a better deal on the Next plan from ATT, and you will come up with many articles from CNet, Ars-Technica, and other sites that break the numbers down like I have. It is true that not everyone has the money to pay for the phone outright, and if you choose to go the direction of the Next plan then that's completely up to you. In order to switch back from the Next plan you need to make the switch within 14 days after buying your phone, otherwise you are stuck. Kind regards, Wayne Merritt On 4/28/14, Joseph Hudson jhud7...@gmail.com wrote: Well Seacord I do not believe that is a rip off I believe that these kind of plans are for people that cannot afford to buy a iPhone out right but they can afford more bang for their buck. Re: Question about keyboard for iPhone
Because I have several devices I looked into http://kbtalkingusa.com Seems interesting. Someone, (I think it might have been Raul), said they found a similar keyboard and it hadn't died on them. Does anyone remember what that keyboard was? I don't think it was the solar Logitech one. Thanks, Ari On Apr 24, 2014, at 1:54 PM, Alan Paganelli alanandsuza...@earthlink.net wrote: The Amazon Basics Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard has an on/off switch and a blind person can tell by touch the status. The keyboard also has 5 rubber feet that keeps it from slipping when used on a table top. The describer mode tells you what each key combo does as well and if you catch it on special, you can get it for under 20 dollars which didn't make me happy. I paid 26 bucks for mine. If I remember right, it's around 40 dollars USD. It's a great keyboard, except that it turns on with the use of a button, which can easily be pressed. This is unfortunate, especially if you have the keyboard in a bag which gets bumped a lot, because it might be turned on often. I would recommend getting a keyboard that uses a physical on-off switch. Pretty much any Bluetooth keyboard you get will work with the iPhone. There are keyboards that are very very small and pocket-sized, but I don't really like using these. If I'm going to be using a keyboard, I'm usually going to be typing for quite a while, so getting something about the size of the Apple keyboard works well for me. Of course, this is just my own use case, and yours might very. Personally, I like using dictation or Fleksy VO for short things. iOS SSH/Telnet client?
Hello, Does anyone know of an SSH client for iOS? Preferably, VoiceOver would read the output as it was printed to the console. It can be for phone, tablet, or both.
