Re: new update to Voice Dream Reader 2.9.0

Do you think this app will ever be able to play audio Daisy books? I would love
to be able to access and copy books across from drop box and play them right
inside this app.

Thanks

 What's New in Version 2.9.0
 Posted Oct 23, 2013
This major release significantly improves usability for VoiceOver users:
 - Incredibly easy-to-use text selection mechanism. Copy to clipboard, lookup
 words
in the dictionary, highlight, and add your own notes.
 - Extensive use of new and innovative swipe-enabled buttons for VoiceOver
 users.
Swipe the Voice Settings button to change the speed rate. Rewind and Fast
 Forward
are built into the Play-Pause button as up and down swipes.
 - The text slider that moves the speech cursor by 5% has been modified so
 that swiping
up moves toward the beginning of the text. The directions have been reversed
 from
previous releases so that it now behaves the same way as the other
 swipe-enabled
controls. For iOS 7, you can double tap the slider to enter a percent value.
 Plus delicious goodies for everyone:
 - Experimental support for MP3 audio books. Yes, it remembers where you leave
 off
just like text. And you make add bookmarks.
 - Pronunciation dictionary import and export. View the entire pronunciation
 dictionary
in an editable text window, allowing editing, copying, and pasting, plus
 exporting
to another app like Dropbox and share it with others via email.
 - Launching Voice Dream Reader from Mobile Safari. Create a bookmark with the
 following
URL. Next time you select this bookmark, it'll open the current web page in
 Voice
 Dream Reader:
 javascript:window.location=com.voicedream.reader://open?url=+window.location
 - Change speech rate on the fly with two-finger up or down swipes. (Not for
 VoiceOver
 users).
 - Fixed several problems with using iOS 7 built-in voices.
 - A lot of the minor improvements and bug fixes.

Re: Changing volume lock screen message.

2013-10-24 Thread Chris Moore
Yes, and have just reported it. It happens with the volume buttons on the side
of the phone and also with inline controls on headphones. Not sure why this is
happening, as the screen does not even wake up

I guess the screen is well locked, as VO locks it twice now whilst audio is
playing too!

Re: I like iOS 7. upgrade.

2013-09-23 Thread Chris Moore
Hi all,

I agree with everything that has been said on this thread.

However, a couple of other things I would like to see improved are:

1. With the introduction of iOS 7, after activating a countdown timer, the
remaining time now appears on the lock screen. However, when you wake your
phone, voiceover's focus does not automatically read this information by
default. Instead voiceover reads the current time (one of the few occasions it
does now whilst something else is also present on the lock screen) or if there
is a notification, then voiceover reads that instead. I feel it would be very
useful if voiceover read out the time remaining on the countdown timer by
default.

2. Whilst listening to audio, such as a podcast or music, the playback
controls now appear on the lock screen. This is a welcome addition, but after
waking the phone up, voiceover's focus lands on the timeline of the recording.
Although this information is useful, I usually only wake my phone whilst
listening to audio to either check the time, or use one of the playback
controls. Such as pause the audio if someone is trying to speak to me. Ok the
headphones that come with the iPhone include inline controls to allow you to
pause and skip etc. I don't use those headphones, and sometimes I connect
directly to my hearing aid.

So for me, I think it would be useful if voiceover read out the current time by
default, as the clock is now on the status bar, as previously it appeared on
the lock screen in larger text which was easier to see or locate with finger.
In addition, I would like to see Apple introduce two finger double tap to pause
and resume audio from the lock screen. This feature is already present to
answer and end a call, so I think adding it for audio would be extremely useful.

3. I feel Apple have missed a trick when it comes to using the new hand
writing feature. What is one of the biggest problems when using a touch screen
whilst dealing with automated services? The keypad! Press 1 for new message,
and press 3 to delete a message my voicemail announces each time I open it (I
am not fortunate to have visual voicemail on EE network). So it would be
really useful if I could just draw the numbers on screen to navigate the
various options. This would be very useful when dialling other customer
services, such as banks etc. No more trying to feel around and locate the
appropriate option and also trying to listen to voiceover on the top of the
automated voice barking instructions. We would also require two finger double
tap to end the call to be enabled by default, as it might become frustrating
having to switch away from hand writing within the rotor to end the call.

I also feel this function would be useful for the telephone dialler, especially
for older people who have lost their vision later in life.

Speaking of the telephone dialler, I would be interested in feedback from low
vision users on how they find the new colour scheme for the telephone keypad.
The contrast is non existent and I would imagine even worse in sun light. I
could just make out the buttons in the previous one, as the contrast was very
good.

4. More than 12 apps within a folder is nice, but shame only 9 now appear on
screen at once. It would be very useful if say I reach app 9 of 9, and flick
to the right once more, I am then taken automatically to page 2, app 1 of 9.
and told I am now on page 2 of whatever. Others may prefer having to manually
change the page. Most of us hated doing that in app switcher, so why should we
have to do it in folders?

5. Is anyone else bothered by the delay of voiceover speaking when you unlock
or lock the phone? The delay is caused by Apple introducing a fancy way of the
LED display slowly fading in or fading out to add that slick Apple touch. If
voiceover users opt to turn off animations within the accessibility settings,
then this should include the funky fade in and out effect, so voiceover is more
snappy when we wake or lock the phone. What does everyone else think?

There are a few other examples I have come across where I could see
improvements being made, or bugs that need to be squashed, such as the ducking
of audio not always coming back up, or the cursor jumping back to the start of
the text message if the box is accidentally touched.. I have taken up enough
of your time already though. I must also point out that there is also a lot to
like about iOS 7 and hopefully between us all we will get those annoying quirks
ironed out by letting Apple know what we think.

Please feel free to let me know your thought.

Thanks

Chris

spelling out a specific word, reviewing the text by line or sentence,
etc. Of course, this won't be an issue once VoiceOver is able to see
the text, but it is an issue for now. Perhaps with VoiceOver able to

Re: Nook App for IOS Devices Now Accessible

2012-11-29 Thread Chris Moore
Don't waste your breath, Apple want to be the only place you can purchase
content directly within iOS. You are better off asking Apple to introduce
similar pricing models and special offers to compete. iBooks are totally
accessible.

If you want a more open market place, then I would suggest Android. Otherwise,
it is iTunes on your device or purchase via your computer and then download
directly to your device via the app.

Just to let everyone know that Barnes and Noble does have a $5 and less

Now of coarse, the books in the $5 section is not the most current top 10

Bossjock Studio

2012-11-10 Thread Chris Moore
Hi gang,

Was just listening to John Gruber's The Talk Show and he had Boss Jock Studio
as a sponsor this week.

Boss Jock Studio is a professional podcast creation app for the iPhone (iPad
version coming soon), and best of all it is fully accessible with voiceover.

You can import from drop box, edit your audio files in Garageband, and then
email them to yourself to open within Boss Jock etc.

I know there are many budding podcasters on here, so now here is an easy way to
do it all on your iPhone and even use professional microphone with it too.

In the UK you will find the app at:

Re: ITV app in the UK

2012-10-06 Thread Chris Moore
Yes, I can get it to work, but it is not perfect.

My advice is to search for the TV program you want. Sadly the button for
search does not work, so if you double tap on A to Z, this brings up the search
box instead believe it or not.

Once you have found and selected the programme you want to watch, do a triple
press of home to turn voice over off and then double tap in the centre of the
screen. This should either start the programme or get you to the next screen
which is accessible again. Triple click home to turn voice over back on and if
your programme has not already started playing, explore the screen to see if
you need to accept their terms if the programme contains adult content etc.

I reported many of the accessibility issues to ITV over a year ago and did not
get a response and even left them bad feedback on iTunes. Maybe it is time I
contacted them again, especially when you see how wonderful iPlayer is now.

Once you get used to how ITV player works (or works with VO that should be
rather), you should be able to watch just about anything via the A to Z button
which is actually search.

2012-08-12 Thread Chris Moore

Hello,
've recently downloaded the trial version and am experimenting with
various approaches for typing. I type with a single finger when not in
fleksy, but there is probably a more efficient technique when using fleksy.
Two thumbs are a possibility, but you would lose time when reversing
your hand to flick with the index finger.

Any ideas welcome.

Chris

Re: VoiceOver and Screen Behavior

2012-07-16 Thread Chris Moore
I have an iPhone 4s running iOS 5.1.1 and I can confirm when you put the screen
curtain on the backlight is still clearly running. Just go into a dark room
and activate the screen curtain and ask anyone sighted if they can still see
that the screen is lit up. I can only see light and dark and I can clearly see
the back light is still on, ok it is not as bright as it would be if the screen
curtain was switched off, so there is probably some battery saving, but I can
assure you the LED backlight is still in use.

The screen curtain does now dim the back light when it is activated. In some
of the earlier IOS releases, when you put on the screen curtain, it did not
adjust the brightness of the back light, all it did was make the screen
black. In very simple terms, you can think of these screens as a bright light
that shines through a transparent layer. By adjusting the colours and
transparency of this layer, the screen makes the various images it needs to.
It is the back light which really uses up the battery. So in earlier IOS
releases where the back light wasn't dimmed with the screen curtain there
wasn't any benefit to the battery of using the screen curtain. Now when the
screen curtain is enabled, the back light is dimmed to its minimum setting.
Another consequence to this is that now if you intend to leave screen curtain
on all the time, there is now no need to go into the screen brightness
settings and turn it down and switch off auto brightness. This is all
effectively done for you by just turning on screen curtain and if you do have
to show something to a sighted person, they won't have to strain to see it.

I certainly don't think that I would get anything like an extra 5 hours
myself and I can't see how having the screen curtain on should make any
difference to whether some apps work

 Hi,

This isn't correct, screen curtain definitely saves battery. I get about
five more hours of battery life with the screen curtain on. Test it for
yourself and you will see the difference. It obviously makes some difference
since apps like digetise don't work when the screen curtain is on.

Hi, actually you don't save battery by using the screen curtain. The screen
is still lit. Just because the text and background are all one color
doesn't mean it offers any battery savings. Hope this helps.

Screen Curtain being on means that the screen is darkened so that text on
the screen is invisible. It should result in battery savings, and this is
why I use it. It does make sense that if VO was removed from memory, the
 screen would automatically go on.

Right screen curtain is a feature of VO so it would be disabled
 if
 VO is turned off.

Since I now use Fleksy regularly and obviously must turn off VO, I
discovered that when VO is turned off, the Screen Curtain is turned off
 as
well. I understand that the Fleksy team is working on a fix for this,
 but
wanted you to know that if you like to keep your Screen Curtain On. you
 will
need to turn it back on with the three finger triple click gesture.
