Catching up on messages and read several below in this string.

I have the Open Com headset and would like to know how do you connect them to 2
different devices and then use them. Here at work I have my personal iPhone and
also my agency iPhone and would like to connect them to both iPhones. Then use
each when receiving calls.

Hi Richard,

How do you lock one device to connect to another? I've never ran into a
problem like this, but would like to have a note about it in case I do. Thanks
much.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

I don't know about the OPenFit, but both the OpenRun and OpenComm if you pair
to two devices, you have to be sure and lock the device you are not using, then
as soon as you start using the other device, it comes over the headset.
I've done that with my iPad and iPhone on those.
I would think the OPenFit should work the same.
But, should and does are often quite different.

Does anyone on this list who has the open fit headphones have a full proof way
of changing from one paired device to the other paired device, assuming you
have two devices paired? I can’t do it. My iPhone just will not reconnect.

You’re right. Since I’m already subscribed to the $5 a month package, I can’t
bring up the page I looked at when I subscribed, but now when I click on the
subscribe button, it just gives me the option to upgrade to NFL Plus Premium,
and there it’s pretty clear that you need Premium to listen to replays of
games, and you’re right, that’s $10 a month.

Did I understand that the NFL plus package that allows rewatching games etc. is
$9.99 but the basic plan is the $4.99 plan?
I'm personally sticking with SiriusXM at least through my free trial that ends
November 4.

OK, I signed up for the NFL Plus free trial, and things worked pretty much as
they did the season before last season. Here’s what I did:

  1. I brought up the NFL app.
  2. I had to go into the Scores tab to get a game started. I couldn’t figure
out how to do this from the NFL Plus tab.
  3. In the Scores tab, I double tapped on the game I was interested in. In
this case, it was the Giants at Patriots.
  4. I then had to double tap on the Watch tab.
  5. Here I could double tap on the home broadcast, which was the Patriots, or
I could double tap on the listen live options, where I could double tap on the
away feed.
  6. At this point the broadcast comes up, but you won’t hear anything because
the audio volume is set to 0. I unmuted the audio by hitting the volume up
button.
  7. Now you can listen to the game but the player is totally inaccessible, so
there’s no way to play/pause or fast forward/rewind.

Like I said, this was pretty much how things worked the season before last.
Last season, the problem was that the volume buttons wouldn’t unmute the audio,
so there was no way for me to listen to the game unless I had a sighted person
around who could tap on the unmute button in the inaccessible player.

SiriusXM is a much more enjoyable way to listen to a game, but it is $12
instead of $5 a month. I did see the option in the Watch tab to relisten to a
game, but I haven’t tried that yet!

Some ballparks and Arena’s don’t have this problem. I used to go to Phillies
baseball games. They had that problem until I called and explained that I
couldn’t enjoy the game and asked them if they could modify it when your in the
park that there is no delay. After a few years they called me back and said

Hi.

I remember going to a college basketball game a few years ago. I thought it
would be nice to take a radio with me to keep up with the action. It didn’t
work. There was about a fifteen second delay between the action and what was
heard on commercial radio. I wasn’t sure why, but this wasn’t an internet

Talking Clock

2021-11-01 Thread 'Cook, Steve' via VIPhone
Hi All,

I updated my iPhone 10Xr this weekend to 15.1. My VoiceOver Clock does not
announce the hourly time as it did in the previous version. The weird thing is,
if my phone is unlocked , the time announces. Any suggestions on how to fix
this? If not, any other recommendations for an hourly chime app? Thanks in
advance!

I Richard,
When I read your other email on the pricing. I took it to say it would be $99 a
year. Is this the way you read it? If that is the case it would be really
expenseve. I remember paying about $75 for KNFB as I thought I got it for a
good price. That app did not pan out very well. I am like you Richard. It seems
really expensive.

I’ve spent the last hour or so running SuperSense through its various modes,
thanks to Shane’s promo code.

in the document mode, Pros: I like the way it prompts you with specific
messages, like move farther from the document; move an inch to the left, etc.
I like the music while processing, very nice.
The accuracy is very good.

Cons: like most OCR apps, it cannot handle columns. If it did, I would
possibly buy it.

Bar codes, Pros: Very fast.
Cons: it did not recognize a hardback book ISBN while Seeing AI’s product
channel did. Otherwise, I think pretty even.

Currency, Pros: very fast.
Cons: I was scanning a $10 bill and when I moved the camera sideways, a couple
times after saying $10, it said $50.
That would be too confusing to someone who did not know or have another money
identification app to double check with.

Explore Mode, Pros: pretty quick and generally accurate. I could see this
helping someone in a hotel room find things like light switches, thermostats,
etc.
Cons: none at this time.

Smart Scan, Pros: very fast and pretty accurate.
Cons: it does not seem any better than Seeing AI’s Short Text mode.

Quick Read, Pros: seems very fast. Also quite accurate.

No cons at this time.

Overall: I most certainly would never pay $100 for this app.
I’m doubtful I would even spend $50.

If I did not have other apps to get my scanning needs met, I would seriously
consider spending the $50, but I’m not in need of it right now with the other
apps I have.

I wish it would start each mode in the stopped position rather than immediately
begin trying to scan.

I will keep exploring uses for it and write if I have updates worth while to
add.

Kindle Store: Buy & Download to your iOS Device

You can shop from the Kindle Store using the Safari browser and deliver Kindle
titles to the Kindle reading app on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.
Your device must be connected to a wireless or data network in order to
download Kindle content to your Kindle reading app.

1. Sign in to the Kindle Store with the same Amazon account you used when you
registered the Kindle reading app. Browse for Kindle titles you want to read,
and then tap to view the product detail page.

2. To send the Kindle title to your device, from the Send wirelessly to
drop-down menu, select your device. If you don't see your device, make sure you
signed in with the Amazon account registered to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod
touch.

3. Tip: Tap Try a Sample to download the beginning of a book for free.

4. After you purchase content, your titles are delivered to the Kindle app on
your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Check your cloud tab.

Hi Kathy,

I used to face the same problem with Uber. As a Visually Impaired and having
experienced this pain, I built an App which will allow everything to be done
with just voice commands. With this, you can simply use a command and can
either message or call the driver and don't have to go through a whole lot of
trouble to simply find the option to message the driver. Just see Louie in
action here -

Thanks. Before that very brief window I was allowed, I could only bring up the
drivers name and when I double tapped on it, expecting the contact options, I
could only read his profile and what people said about him.

Hello,
The only issue I have with kindle books is that you have to keep the screen on
in order to read the books. Other than that kindle books are great. If you find
yourself wanting to read a lot, there is a kindle unlimited subscription for
$10 a month. I just signed up for it today for six months to try it out.

I have a library approaching 3000 Kindle books and read them exclusively on my
iPHONE. The Kindle app has been accessible since around 2013. Some Kindle books
are too graphical to support VoiceOver but this is relatively rare. Typically,
it's because a book is a graphic novel or comic. Look in the information in the
book's entry on the Amazon site. You need to buy Kindle books from the Amazon
site local to your country. Also, you'll need to register the Kindle app after
installing it on your iPHONE. I have a section about this in the guide I wrote.
Enjoy the book.

Hello everyone,

Thank you to those who have responded to my questions about the Apple watch. I
really appreciate it. For some reason, I wasn't expecting much of a response.
Or I thought you all would say it wasn't all that accessible. I am glad I was
wrong on this.

My main reasons for wanting to possibly get one, is so that I can track my
activities, and my sleep. I am wanting to start exercising a bit more than I
do. I think it would be very beneficial to me to possibly have a watch.

Also, I don't always sleep well. So being able to track this better, and
easier, would really come in handy.

I almost always have my phone with me though. So I don't know if I can justify
making a purchase like this.

As for the sleep tracking, does the watch somehow do this on it's own? Somehow
keep up with your sleep?

Or do you just have an App on your watch and phone, and you have to enter in
all the information yourself.

Also, what are some of the ways the watch tracks your activity?

If I were riding an exercise bike, would it be able to possibly help me to know
how fast I was going, and how many calories I burned? Or would I need an App to
help me to do this?

Also, how do you all respond to notifications, and text messages?

How can it be easier to respond to texts messages from the watch? Or how can it
be easier to read notifications?

I would assume that the watch has to be charged every so often?

If so, how does this work?

Also, someone mentioned only having 2 faces.

What does this mean?

Why would you possibly want different faces?

Sorry for all of the questions. I know there are a lot here. I hope you all
won't mind. I am fascinated though, and would really love to know more.

Thank you,

Terri

Is there a way to turn off all notifications temporarily?

Hi List,

I said I would post the product names and links for the Anker 18W fast charger
power adapter and the Anker USB C to lightning cable I got for my SE 2020 after
getting and trying them out. Here are the product names and links at Amazon:

USB C Charger, Anker 18W PIQ 3.0 Compact Fast Charger Adapter, PowerPort III
Nano USB C Wall Charger for iPhone 11/11 Pro / 11 Pro Max/XR/XS/X, Galaxy S10 /
S9, Pixel 3/2, iPad Pro and More

This charger sells for $17.99 at Amazon US and has a 4.8 star rating. Here is
the link to it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WRKXQ8W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8=1

Here is a TinyURL link to it:

https://tinyurl.com/yalw2nkk

I got a 6 foot Anker USB C to lightning cable named Anker USB C to Lightning
Cable, iPhone 11 Charger [6ft Apple MFi Certified] Powerline II for iPhone SE /
11 Pro/X/XS/XR / 8 Plus/AirPods Pro, Supports Power Delivery

This cable sells for $14.99 at Amazon US and has an Amazon rating of 4.6. Here
is the link to it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H256MBK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8=1

Here is a TinyURL link to it:

https://tinyurl.com/y9or4w7p

The size of this 18W Anker charger feels the same as my 5W charger that came
with my SE 2020 so it's fairly small at about an inch square not counting the
plugs. My SE was 42% charged when I plugged it into the new fast charger with
the screen not locked. After 10 minutes of charging, my SE was 60% charged.
After 20 minutes of charging, my SE was 74%charged. After 30 minutes of
charging, my SE was 83% charged. The phone did not get overly warm during the
charging process and felt no different than when plugged into the 5W charging
plug that came with it.

For those who are unfamiliar with USB C plugs, they are small and plug in
either way just like the lightning plug. I will say the USB C plug is a bit
thicker in depth than the lightning plug.

I hope someone finds the above helpful.

I would also recommend the JAWS webinar. I listened to the audio file and read
over the documents, and learned a lot. Note, though it is presented using JAWS,
Teams has lots of accessibility and keyboard support. The help messages that
JAWS spoke were built-in Teams messages, meaning you should be able to use it
with any screen reader.
The iOS interface may be different, but the concepts are similar. And yes, you
can join meetings via the Team iOS app. Some of my department members have done
that very thing. They've also reported their audio sounded great on the mobile
app.
Now all Freedom Scientific webinars are free. Here is a link to the page of the
Teams webinar:

Hi List,

Often I'm playing some sort of media on my iPhone and don't want to be
interrupted by notifications which seem to have a knack for popping up at the
most inconvenient times. Do you have any suggestions for the easiest way to
turn off notifications and turn them back on later? I'm thinking maybe engaging
the mute switch on my iPhone 8 might do this but I'm not sure if that's right
or if it's the best method.

I'm running iOS 13.3.1 and thanks in advance for any help.

Apple Music

Hi All

Using apple music on an iPhone XR running the current IOS. Is it possible to
select multiple songs in a list to add to a playlist I have created? I would
rather select them all at once instead of having to add them one at a time.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I just updated my 6S phone to IOS 13 then updated all the apps. I have now
noticed that in the BARD app, VoiceOver says “space” after any button I press.
This is even true if I am playing and pausing from the button on my Bluetooth
earphones. I don’t recall this from before. Anyone else noticing this?

Subject: [External] RE: For Those Using the Business, Non-Apple Supported
Version of iTunes, an Update is Available

Hello Julian,

While you ask a simple enough question, I'm afraid that the answer is not
equally so.

First, the reason I use the business version of iTunes is because I choose to
have a full copy of every app on my iPhone stored in my iTunes library on my PC.

This is very useful especially when restoring a backup to a new device or even
the same device.

For example, not so long ago, my original 8 Plus gave up the proverbial ghost.
As a result, Apple gave me a new 8 Plus. I simply took the new phone,
connected it to my PC and restored it from a backup. Because I have full
copies of all of my favorite apps, even those no longer available in the App
Store, those apps were successfully installed on my new 8 Plus and all was well.

I relay all of this so that you will understand the following short answer to
your question, said answer being the following: The only way you can be
certain that apps, no longer available in the app store, can continue to be
installed on any of your devices is to make certain that you have a full copy
of said apps in your local iTunes library.

So, in iTunes for business, when you bring up the Apps area, if you see the
apps listed in your local library, then, all things being equal, you most
likely have a full copy stored locally. If you do not, then I'm afraid that
you will not be able to restore the app should your local device copy be lost
and the app in question is no longer available in the app store.

Of course, this is a general answer as I will not drill down any further on
this topic as there are simply too many variables to consider in order to
provide a truly comprehensive answer.

I'm certain that if you do some serious Googling, you will find out more on
this topic.

Good Luck,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you for this information, I am going to go and install this update on my
beloved Windows 7 PC. I have a question that maybe you can answer, how can I
make sure that when I do encrypted back ups to this version of iTunes that the
actual app files are being downloaded to my computer as opposed to just being
indexed. I want to make sure I don't lose apps such as money reader if I should
have to restore from this back up. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Yeah, in general, I didn't ever find the VoiceOver Overdrive experience on iOS
to be all that great be it with e or audiobooks.
In the sense that things were labeled and such, sure I suppose, but as far as
the user experience... It's not my first or second or third choice to consume
reading material on my iPhone.

Hi Mark,
I gave a really serious look at the libby app and also the OverDrive app a
while back, maybe even before iOS 12. It might’ve been iOS 11. I really really
couldn’t get it to work well, either one of them. I wanted to borrow print
ebooks, not audiobooks. With the OverDrive app, are you using the print side or
the Audible side? Do you have books sent to your Kindle app?
Or are you able to find them and read them efficiently within the overdrive
app? I just remember having all kinds of problems with anything having to do
with getting library books.

I recommend searching the App Store for Keto Recipe.
There are a ton of paid apps, most with a free trial.
There is one that has high ratings that is free, with ads.
I always read the app descriptions before downloading apps.
No idea if any are accessible with VoiceOver.

I may have to just reset my phone to factory default at some point; there are a
number of very strange issues that have cropped up that haven't gone away no
matter what I've done.

Pocket does show up in Newsify, but not Safari. I installed Instapaper and that
did show up in Safari. So I assume it must be a Pocket issue.

Command for XR

2019-06-10 Thread Cook, Steve
Hi All,

I have an iPhone XR. Let me explain my question. I have folders, then I open
an app from within the folder. What is the command to close the app and the
folder to return to the home screen? Thanks in advance!

Voice Dream Scanner

2019-05-07 Thread Cook, Steve
The below article is from the May issue of Access World

Voice Dream Scanner: A New Kind of OCR

There is a new player in the optical character recognition (OCR) space, and it
comes from an old friend: Winston Chen, the developer of Voice Dream Reader and
Voice Dream Writer, both of which we’ve reviewed in past issues of AccessWorld.
In this article we’ll start out with a brief conversation with Chen. Then we’ll
take a look at the developer’s latest offering: Voice Dream Scanner. Spoiler
alert—it will probably be the best $5.99 you’ll ever spend on a text
recognition app!

AccessWorld readers who use their phones to audibly read e-Pub books, PDFs or
Bookshare titles are likely already familiar with Voice Dream Reader. It works
so well with VoiceOver and TalkBack, it’s hard to believe it wasn’t developed
specifically for the access market. But according to Chen, “I just wanted to
build a pocket reader I could use to store all my books and files so I could
listen to them on the go. No one was more surprised than me when I began
receiving feedback from dyslexic and blind users describing how helpful Voice
Dream Reader was for their needs and making some simple suggestions to improve
the app’s accessibility.”

Chen’s second offering, Voice Dream Writer, was also directed at the mainstream
market. “Sometimes it’s easier to proofread your document by listening to it
instead of simply rereading the text,” says Chen. At the time, Apple’s
VoiceOver cut and paste features and other block text manipulation capabilities
were, shall we say, not quite what they are today? The innovative way Chen
handled these functions made Voice Dream Writer equally useful to users with
visual impairments.

Reinventing the OCR Engine

“I’ve been wanting to add OCR to Voice Dream Reader for a few years now,” says
Chen. “It would be useful for reading protected PDF’s and handouts and memos
from school and work.”

The hurdle Chen kept encountering was finding a useable OCR engine. “There are
some free, open source engines, but they don’t work well enough for my
purposes,” he says. “The ones that do work well are quite expensive, either as
a one-time license purchase with each app sold or with ongoing pay-by-the-use
options. Either of these would have raised the price I have to charge too much
for my value proposition.”

Last year, however, Chen began experimenting with Apple’s artificial
intelligence (AI), called Vision Framework, that’s built into the latest iOS
versions, along with Google’s Tesseract, TensorFlow Lite, and ML Kit.

“Instead of using a single standard OCR engine, I combined the best aspects of
each of these freely available tools, and I was pleasantly surprised by the
results.”

Instead of making OCR a Voice Dream Reader feature, Chen decided to incorporate
his discovery into a separate app called Voice Dream Scanner. “I considered
turning it into an in-app purchase, only there are a lot of schools that use
Reader and they aren’t allowed to make in-app purchases,” he says. As to why he
didn’t simply make it a new Reader feature, he smiles, “I do have a family to
feed.”

Chen has been careful to integrate the new Voice Dream Scanner functionality
into VD Reader, however. For example, if you load a protected PDF file into the
app and open it, the Documents tab now offers a recognition feature. You can
now also add to your Voice Dream Reader Library not only from Dropbox, Google
Drive, and other sources, including Bookshare, but using your device’s camera
as well.

To take advantage of this integration you’ll need both Voice Dream Reader and
Voice Dream Scanner. Both can be purchased from the iOS App Store. VD Reader is
also available for Android, but currently VD Scanner is iOS only.

Of course you don’t have to have VD Reader to enjoy the benefits of the new
Voice Dream Scanner.

A Voice Dream Scanner Snapshot

The app installs quickly and easily, and displays with the icon name “Scanner”
on your iOS device. Aim the camera toward a page of text. The app displays a
real-time video image preview which is also the “Capture Image” button. Double
tap this button, the camera clicks, and the image is converted to text almost
immediately. You are placed on the “Play” button, give a quick double tap and
the text is spoken using either a purchased VD Reader voice or your chosen iOS
voice. Note: You can instruct Scanner to speak recognized text automatically in
the Settings Menu.

Just wondering whether any of you still occasionally get a message stating that
the message failed to send after you had previously sent a text message. I ask
because I still occasionally get such a message despite the fact that my
intended recipient did in fact receive the message. The problem now is that I
never know when to believe the message failure notice unless my recipient has
already responded.

2018-10-25 Thread Cook, Steve
Hi All,

I use the default mail app on my iPhone 7 using the current IOS. Is there a
way to read your EMail messages that come in table format in just plain text?
A great example are the messages I receive from GroupOn. Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

Running IOS12. When sending a few people in my contacts a text. I receive a
message back saying undeliverable, but if I send it a second time. The message
goes through just fine. It did not start this until IOS 12. Just a note the
people I receive the message back undeliverable are running Android phones.
