Carolyn,

My books are available in ePub or PDF format. There are step-by-step
instructions throughout, both for learning VoiceOver concepts and for using
individual apps.

Hope that helps,

iOS History: Were You There At The Beginning?

2019-05-26 Thread Shelly Brisbin
Hello!
Some of you know me. Some of you don’t. I’ve written six editions of the
book, iOS Access for All, and a seventh will probably happen sometime this
fall. And I make a bunch of podcasts. But I’m working on something else.
And I could use your help.

June 19 marks the 10th anniversary of an accessible iOS. It’s the day the
iPhone 3GS shipped in the US. To commemorate that milestone, I’m producing
an audio project, to be released on June 19, 2019. I’ve interviewed lots of
people who were around at the time the iPhone got VoiceOver, and I’m
looking to talk with a couple more. I want to record short audio interviews

–people who have used iPhone or iPad in school or college, particularly if
you can talk about how that experience was different from your pre-iOS
accessibility experiences in education.

– women and people of color, especially if you were interested in, or
purchased an iPhone/iPod Touch when it first became accessible in 2009, but
also if you have a good iOS story to tell, but weren’t in that early wave.

– iOS developers

– people who use iOS accessibility tools other than VoiceOver

– any former Apple folks who can talk about what it was like to work on
accessibility there.

If you fit one of these categories, please get in touch privately. I’ll

Hi Alan, and all,

iOS Access for All is a standard ePub book, and can be read with any app
(including Voice Dream or iBooks) that supports that format.

Hope this helps, and thanks for getting the book.

If you have Voice Dream Reader, you should be able to read it with that.
It sounds like it is a generic ePub book and not tied to a specific app.

I'm wanting to just open the book and have VoiceOver continuously read it.
This doesn't seem to be working as the app stops reading after a page.

Is what I want to do possible or is there an issue with this book?

Seeking your thoughts about Calendar app

2013-08-16 Thread Shelly
Hi all,

I'm working on the chapter of my iOS book that covers Apple-provided iOS apps.
I've finally come face to face with the conundrum of Calendar app. Realizing
that it has some um, accessibility challenges, I want to do the following:

--point out instances in which VoiceOver just plain won't work properly
--list workarounds for VoiceOver inadequacies
--suggest alternatives to the Calendar app; both iOS apps, and accessible Web
calendar interfaces
--make good recommendations about how to manage calendaring, especially if
you're using multiple calendars, or need to interact with shared calendars from
an employer, or other group.

I have worked through the archives here, and have learned a lot. Now I'm
looking for any feedback, or especially effective ways you have found to manage
your calendar. No need to address all of the questions I've posed above, just
tell me what works for you. Feel free to respond on the list, or to me directly.

Many thanks,
-shelly

Re: Seeking your thoughts about Calendar app

2013-08-16 Thread Shelly
Hi Anna, and thanks,

Calendar setup on the phone (or iPad) is pretty straightforward.

I, too, use Siri to set up an event, though I sometimes need to edit in order
to add info to the appointment.

Have you worked with multiple calendars? VO won't read the calendar a
particular event belongs to, unless you open the event. Nor will it give you a
status update when you enable/disable a calendar's visibility. You can make the
update, but VO won't tell you whether you're turned the calendar on or off.

I really enjoyed your iOS book, by the way.

I use siri to make appointments when I can because it's faster. I have a

be easier on the phone. But I've found looking at dates and setting
 appointments to be accessible.

New Book: iOS Access for All

2013-05-26 Thread Shelly
Greetings, everyone,

I wanted to let you all know about a project I'm working on. I am writing a
book about iOS accessibility, called iOS Access for All, Your Comprehensive
Guide to Accessibility for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. I'm writing about all
accessibility tools in iOS, including VoiceOver, the low vision tools,
Sir/voice input, guided access, assistive touch, and features designed for
hearing impaired users. I've been writing about technology and the Mac for more
than 25 years, and this will be my 13th book.

iOS Access for All focuses on teaching you how to use iOS, if you're new, and
how to get the most from it if you're not. There will also be a chapter
featuring the best third-party apps. I want to include apps that are designed
to enhance accessibility, as well as great apps in all categories that happen
to do accessibility right.

And the app chapter is why I'm writing to this group, even before the book is
published. I have reviewed hundreds of software products over the years, but I
know that everyone who uses iOS has a different set of favorite apps. I'm
looking for feedback about the apps you love and why, and which ones you think
blind folks and other iOS users need to know about.

It's a big topic. I have started discussions of different app categories on my
site, on Facebook, and on Google Plus. Links are below. Please follow the book
on your favorite social network, and help me kickstart the conversation there.
So far, I've posted about games and navigation apps. I plan to roll out more
discussions during the next few weeks, covering productivity, news/information,
entertainment, reading, lifestyle, and accessibility apps.

There's a link below to my FAQ about the book, but you can also learn more
about it from a couple of podcasts where I've been interviewed. I had a great
talk with JJ from Blind Bargains and Robert and Allison welcomed me to The Tech
Doctor podcast.

OK, here are my book links:

welcome any feedback you have, so use the social links above, or get in touch
via my personal contact info below.

Yep, I know about, and use AppleVis. They provide a wondrous firehose of
