I added the English us braille table, but the English us is 
dimmed and the unified English is selected.  I can’t figure out how to unselect 
it.  The double tap doesn’t seem to do the trick. Sorry for being so dense.

You need to change your braille table to U.S. English Braille. To do this, open 
VoiceOver Settings, choose Braille, then Braille Tables. You'll find a button 
that says, "English, Unified, System." Double-tap that and then double-tap 
English, U.S.
