Re: Exploring a future destination

2014-07-01 Thread Terje Strømberg
In Norway i experienced the same thing. «Drive north, west», but you get the
turn by turn, but not always accurate enough. I may be 30m to the turn. And it
will not be updated as you get closer to the turn. That is irritating. I like
to walk with the phone in my hand. I am able to use my thumb to press on the
top of the Google Maps screen and get the turn by turn announced again as often
i press the top of the Google Maps screen. Together with Blind Squares «mine
position» it works. Thanks for Blind Square.

Soon i will try only Google Maps. At the same time have Blind Square running in
the background not using Google Maps, just its own tracking. If memory serves,
Blind Square is not using the map Google Maps but an other map provider. Blind
Square only loads the turn by turn function in Google Maps.

Take care

me a screen where i among other things can choose what route mode i will use,

Unfortunately with the built-in voice guidance, you are getting all it's
going to give you. It's generally up to us, the users, to figure out that
when it says to turn left at a certain street in 100 feet, where to turn
left. If we get it wrong, the app updates or we turn around.

I like google maps walking directions transit mode. It took me a while to
figure out how to read the entire route before leaving my start point.

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to share directions? Say I find
walking directions to a restaurant and want to send those to a friend, is
there a way via the app?

Thanks,
Traci

The original app in this thread is Places Around, the $1.99. :)

I'll have to check out looking for just business names. That is a bonus.

I haven't noticed that with Apple Maps. Sadly, so far, I have an

You only need to hit the button called «tracking» left bottom corner three
times if it is off. When Voice Over says «tracking with direction» it will
announce streets live as you walk. Take notice, Apple Maps sucks current out of
iPhone like no other app. As much as light on 100% do.

Take care

2014-06-18 Thread Andrew Lamanche
I'd like to ask - adding to this great discussion - whether there is an maps
app that would allow one to become somewhat familiar with a new country or
destination. I'm thinking of visiting Cyprus, and I'm wondering whether there
is a map app that would allow me to get familiar with the country and more
importantly with the particular town close to which I'm going to be staying.

Thanks for any tips.

Another pro for Places Around, is that you can also search for a business if
you are unable to find the business listed in its approperate category.

There was a Groupon in my inbox the other day, with the subject nine

 Hi all,

We are going on vacation next Month to a town that is suppose to be
very walkable. I want to enter the address of the hotel plan some
future walks to shops, restaurants, dog friendly area etc. At this
point on my iPhone, I have no special GPS apps. I have maps, google
maps, map quest, and a handful of public transit apps. It is a small
town we are going to, so public transit won't apply.

:) What do you suggest? I have of course heard of blind square
Ariadne gps, would you recommend one of those? Something else?

I thought I'd look at around me and walk score, but I'm not sure these
apps will do what I want.

I'd love to use the app and pretend I'm on Front street walking in the
town. If you know what I mean.

 Thanks,
 Traci

The original app in this thread is Places Around, the $1.99. :)

I'll have to check out looking for just business names. That is a bonus.

I haven't noticed that with Apple Maps. Sadly, so far, I have an easier time

Yes, this is correct. There are several nice fields one can leave focus on
depending on the information one prefers VO to speak automatically. Besides the
nearest address, when running a route, one can leave focus on remaining
distance to next turn, remaining time to next turn (calculated based on current
speed), remaining time for route, estimated completion time, and next turn.

I would suggest the app places around. I have used this app on many ocassions
to find restruants, shopping, parks, museums etc before our vacations. The app
is fully accessible and POI's are seperated into categories for ease of
searching.

Here's the link to Places Around in the app store.

Re: Exploring a future destination

2014-06-16 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi Traci,

It would help if you could tell us what city/town you're going to visit,
that way if there's a specialty app for that city/town, someone from that
city/town could tell you if it exists.

For example, if you were coming to Toronto, I would tell you that you could
visit the Toronto website, see what's in Toronto that would be worth seeing,
and you could take public transit to each location, as all tourist
destinations in Toronto are accessible by public transit.

In any case, if you're to rely solely on the GPS apps on your iPhone, you'll
kill your battery, and not have a way to get back. This way, you'll know
your destination, and have a more reliable way of finding out about your
destination.

Hi all,

We are going on vacation next Month to a town that is suppose to be very
walkable. I want to enter the address of the hotel plan some future walks
to shops, restaurants, dog friendly area etc. At this point on my iPhone, I
have no special GPS apps. I have maps, google maps, map quest, and a
handful of public transit apps. It is a small town we are going to, so
public transit won't apply.

:) What do you suggest? I have of course heard of blind square Ariadne
gps, would you recommend one of those? Something else?

I thought I'd look at around me and walk score, but I'm not sure these apps
will do what I want.

I'd love to use the app and pretend I'm on Front street walking in the town.
If you know what I mean.

Thanks,
Traci

It's a small town about two hours east of Seattle. Leavenworth Washington. It
has a very Bavarian feel. :-) I hope I spelled that correctly.

There was a Groupon in my inbox the other day, with the subject nine

I'm finding the app you suggested very easy to use. I like how it integrates

RE: Exploring a future destination

2014-06-16 Thread Cristóbal
I use Around Me all the time. It’s Voiceover accessible.

From the description, it looks like both apps do more or less the same thing.

Hi Traci,

It would help if you could tell us what city/town you're going to visit, that
way if there's a specialty app for that city/town, someone from that city/town
could tell you if it exists.

For example, if you were coming to Toronto, I would tell you that you could
visit the Toronto website, see what's in Toronto that would be worth seeing,
and you could take public transit to each location, as all tourist destinations
in Toronto are accessible by public transit.

In any case, if you're to rely solely on the GPS apps on your iPhone, you'll
kill your battery, and not have a way to get back. This way, you'll know your
destination, and have a more reliable way of finding out about your destination.

2014-06-16 Thread Traci Duncan
We are driving there. I haven't been to Grand Cooley since I was a kid. :)

I use to use around me, but the difference between the 2 apps seems to be, I
can search around an area without actually being there. I don't think around
me does that.

I found it funny and interesting that with places around, I could even search a
town in England.
