RE: Home Thermostat Controlled by iPhone

2014-12-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
This seems to be very much targeted to wards the European countries although it
does mentions it supports 90 through 220 Volt and 50 and 60 Hertz. I did not
see a price for this on their website. I also think this is a case where
commercially available products (at least here in North America) can do what
this can do and offer good if not perfect accessibility. I have no problems
buying a product made for the blind if it does something better, but if I can
buy a commercial product which works just as well then I would probably opt for
the commercially available product. KNFB Reader is a great example where an app
made for the blind outperforms other apps and I think all who bought it would
agree and say the $99 price tag is actually worth it. Anyhow, it would be
interesting to know the price for this thermostat.

Sieghard

Re: Home Thermostat Controlled by iPhone

2014-12-11 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

For people in the UK that are interested in things like this you may
wish to look at Hive from British Gas:
http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/hive-active-heating.html
The price is £150 including installation although the page implies
that if you're not a new / existing British Gas customer the price
will be £199. I don't own one of these units but I've explored the app
in demo mode I'm as confident as I can be that it will be usable
without actually having the product to test it with.

Cheers,
Ben.

2014-12-11 Thread Rick Alfaro
I’m using a thermostat purchased from Home Depot for about $100. It’s sold
under the 3m Filtreet brand. The IOS based software is quite accessible.
Programming can also be done from their web site which is

sighted help to get it up and running the first time but this was quite some
time ago for me so this may have improved.

Home Thermostat Controlled by iPhone

2014-12-10 Thread Andy Baracco
A while back, there was talk on this list about a smart home thermostat that
can be controlled with an iPhone. As usual, because it didnt’ apply to me at
the time, I didn’t save the info. Does anyone have info about such a beast, and
is it accessible to blind folks?

RE: Home Thermostat Controlled by iPhone

2014-12-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Andy,

I have been using the thermostat by www.RadioThermostat.com
http://www.RadioThermostat.com for several years now and they work great and
the app is accessible. I know a few people posted that they have been able to
find the thermostat which I believe is $140 from the website for $99 from Home
Depot. Of course you also will need a professional installer to install this
since it requires an extra wire to be run from the furnace to wherever you want
the thermostat. This is a 24 Volt line which provides power to the thermostat.
If you are lucky your existing cable may have 4 wires in it in which case you
are good, if not a completely new cable may need to be installed. You can also
search the archive for “Radio Thermostat” and you’ll find some of the old posts.

There is also a WiFi thermostat from Nest available, but it’s more expensive
and I don’t know about the accessibility although one would hope that it is
accessible. You can easily find it on the Apple Store since it is sold there.
Just look under “home automation”, can’t remember the price, but I think it was
over $200.

There is starting to be all sorts of neat stuff showing up in the area of home
automation. I just purchased 3 wireless security monitoring cameras for my
retail business. They are from a company called Dropcam which I believe was
purchased by Nest. Of course I can’t see the camera feed, but the app is very
accessible, I could easily set up the cameras and they do have 2-way voice
communication so I can open the app, select a camera and hear what it picks up
and the Talkback button is accessible so I can talk through the built-in
speaker.

I am also about to order the first WiFi connected thermostat which is now
available for in-floor heating from the company Nuheat. It is called the
“Signature” and I was able to find it for $190 (most places including Amazon
sell it for $250 to $275). The app which I already downloaded has a demo mode
and it seems to be very accessible. Like I said, all sorts of neat stuff out
there and I really want to buy some of the Philipps Hue LED light bulbs which
you can control with an app (turn them on/off, dim them, change their colour,
program them to come on at certain times and all that), but they are still
quite expensive and I am hoping the price might come down as competitors may
also release products like that.

Regards,

Sieghard
