Hi All, Localscope, an iPhone navigation app, is free today. This app gives information on what's in your vicinity and lets you search for POIs similar to AroundMe and Where To?, but has some other features. For example, from the main screen, your present location is identified, and you can share this with others with both address information and link to Google maps, subject to the usual GPS accuracy limits. However, when you search for POIs, you can change the source of your search from the default Google Places, to other sources like Four Square, Yelp, Yellow Pages (though this seems to only be the Australian Yellow Pages), etc. This iPhone app works internationally, and you can select the sources it uses, which includes social media sites.
Here's the app store URL: • Localscope (free for a short period, usually lists for $2.99) by Cynapse https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/localscope/id409869453?mt=8 Be aware that the labeling of the Localscope app interface is not the greatest for VoiceOver users, but it's usable. For example, the buttons on the main screen are "Gear White", "Dashboard BTN Discover","Dashboard BTN Search", and "icon Aroow1 White Up" beside your current address. You'll want to relabel these elements with the two finger double tap and hold to something like "Settings & Help", "Discover", "Search", and "My Location". Also, when you navigate away from the main dashboard screen, the button in the top left corner of the screen for returning to the main screen is not identified as a "back" button, and in the case of using the "Discover" and "Search" buttons are labeled "icon Dashboard White". I couldn't use the two finger scrub gesture to move back. You'll have to decide for yourself whether the real content advantages of this app outweights the annoying nature of the interface . For example, the "search" button has a category for "jobs". Double tapping this brings up a list of results with their addresses and distances that you can double tap for more information. But if you move your finger up from the home button at the bottom of the screen, just above your location address (or longitude and latitude coordinates if an address can't be resolved) you'll hear the selected source announced, which is "Google Places", but with the labeling of this app will come out as "selected, lens incon google places unsel, dimmed button". If you flick right to another source and double tap, like "Four Square", "Yelp", "Factual", "Wikimapia", "City Search", or other sources, you get different listed search results, so you can get a quite substantial list of possibilities. Also, note that many of the sources for the "Discover" button are for photographs and image sites like "Picasa", "Panoramio","Flickr", and these tend to get listed first. There is a user guide under the "Gear White" (aka "Settings & Help" when relabeled) page under the help tab, but focus doesn't go correctly to these items when the previous "Settings" tab contents updates, so I end up double tapping "km" to bring up the guide. I know this is one of David Chittenden's favorite POI apps, so maybe he can offer more suggestions. I think it's worthwhile to get while free, and useful if you can get past the annoying labeling. I think the developer's Twitter name is @cynapse, if anyone wants to get I. Touch with them about improving accessibility. HTH.
