RE: Mark on Weather, Dating, and Amazon

2024-02-28 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Bill,

For everyday use, the native iOS app is fine but for extremely specific
localized precipitation forecasts, I think the NOA website is the fastest way
to get the info I need.

I have never used OK Cupid so cannot speak as to its interface.

Under the heading of full disclosure:
In no way did I intend to give the impression that the big box dating services,
such as Match.com, are easily VoiceOver accessible. However, they are, in
fact, accessible via VoiceOver but it can take quite a while to understand and
navigate the features of the service.

Be that as it may, with enough patience, a VoiceOver user can use the dating
services, independently, in my opinion.

If possible, have a sighted person help you setup your online dating profile.
Once done, you should be, more or less, good to go.

Also, the web browser interface, as opposed to the phone app, is probably going
to work better for those who are totally blind.

Finally, be certain to upload the best picture of yourself, as possible. In my
opinion, you will definitely need a sighted person to take a good photo of you;
don't be surprised if capturing that perfect photo takes a while.

In a non-online dating related instance, a few days ago, a friend sent me over
14 photos of herself, for online publication and they were all terrible. Now,
she is a very pretty woman but, for some reason, the photos she and her best
friend took, made her face seem either long or egg shaped.

Finally, we got together and went to a couple of various locations in town and
I, yes yours truly, took about 18 photos, before shooting the one that was just
right.

Of course, the thing we all laughed about was that it took a low vision guy, in
order to get the best photo. Sometimes, the universe if full of irony.

Now don't get me wrong, no one in his right mind would pay me to take photos
but, every now and then, I do get lucky with the camera.

These days, I wonder if a big box online dating service is the right solution
for those over a certain age, say, 50 or so?

A friend of mine recently engaged the services of a private match making
service. We'll see how that works out.

I am truly amazed at how difficult it can be for those of us who are visually
impaired to make a special connection; there are just so many cultural stigmas
about blind people that simply cannot be dismissed with an edict. Hmm.

Just the musings of a shutterbug (smile).

Yes, I would agree, Mark. You would think the Weather Channel app would be the
best. I have it but tend to use the native Weather app. It’s also confusing
because TWC has gone through a lot of changes with their Local Now app and then
the new streaming service app, and it’s hard to follow what is the best thing
to use. Perhaps some advocacy with them about accessibility would be in order.
As for dating apps, how is OKCupid to use? I have it on my phone but haven’t
set it up yet, and I have a proposed text profile written in Word on my laptop.

Okay, onto Amazon / Audible news:
So, 3 years ago, I purchased a Whisper Sync title in both Kindle and
Audible format, at the same time, from Amazon.

Long story short, I could not download the Kindle audible companion of
the book last week. Now the Audible audio format of the title would
play just fine.

It took almost an hour to reach someone at Kindle support who said she
would refund my money for the Audible version of the title if I could
find the Audible purchase order number. She could see the Kindle
order purchase number but she could not see the order number
confirming that I had purchased the Audible version.

Even with her help and patience, we could not locate the order number
confirming my Audible purchase in my Amazon Library. Just before
giving up, I realized that I keep every confirmation email I receive
from Amazon in an email folder.

It took about 15 more minutes but I was able to locate the number and
when I gave it to her, she was able to see that I had, in fact,
purchased the Audible version.

So, she refunded my money. At the time I purchased the title, the
cost was $7.99. However, the cost of that same title, today is
$25.99. So, she refunded the $25.99 as that is the replacement cost
of the title. I waited a few days, just to make certain that I
received the refund then I purchased the title, again.

My point? Always keep every email confirmation you receive from
Amazon because you never know when you may need it.

Okay, I think that about covers it, for now.

I hope this finds you well and I look forward to your replies.

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing.

I am delighted to report that last week's rain storms did not cause any
further damage to my property so that is a good thing.

Given the weather patterns here in the golden state, I have come to realize
that the native Apple weather app is not the most accurate. So, based on
the recommendation of several contractors who will be helping me get my
property back in order, I started using the NOA website for my local
precipitation predictions.

NOA stands for: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

You can get your local forecast, online, by entering your Zip Code at
http://www.weather.gov.

In the US, virtually every app and news outlet uses NOA for their weather
forecasts.

Two things to note, here:
1.
If one is willing to drill down a bit, one can find the same NOA info from
within the native Apple weather app but, unless one understands how the data
is formatted, I do not think the info is easily understandable.
2.
While the Weather Channel app for iOS reflects the most accurate NOA data,
astonishing as it is for me to believe, future casts are, in effect,
inaccessible via VoiceOver. I mean, you can hear the data but unless you
can see the display, you would be hard-pressed to have VO locate it. I
would think that, after all these years, the Weather Channel app would be
the best app for iOS; and yet, it is not. If any of you have any
recommendations for free weather apps I could try, let me know.

Okay, moving on:

A while back, people were asking about online dating apps. Using a couple
of these apps, I have gone on more than a few dates, with different women,
recently; while not easy, these dating sites can work in meeting someone.
It just takes patience and perseverance; so to those of you seeking someone
special, hang in there and do not give up.

Okay, onto Amazon / Audible news:
So, 3 years ago, I purchased a Whisper Sync title in both Kindle and Audible
format, at the same time, from Amazon.

Long story short, I could not download the Kindle audible companion of the
book last week. Now the Audible audio format of the title would play just
fine.

It took almost an hour to reach someone at Kindle support who said she would
refund my money for the Audible version of the title if I could find the
Audible purchase order number. She could see the Kindle order purchase
number but she could not see the order number confirming that I had
purchased the Audible version.

Even with her help and patience, we could not locate the order number
confirming my Audible purchase in my Amazon Library. Just before giving up,
I realized that I keep every confirmation email I receive from Amazon in an
email folder.

It took about 15 more minutes but I was able to locate the number and when I
gave it to her, she was able to see that I had, in fact, purchased the
Audible version.

So, she refunded my money. At the time I purchased the title, the cost was
$7.99. However, the cost of that same title, today is $25.99. So, she
refunded the $25.99 as that is the replacement cost of the title. I waited
a few days, just to make certain that I received the refund then I purchased
the title, again.

My point? Always keep every email confirmation you receive from Amazon
because you never know when you may need it.

Okay, I think that about covers it, for now.

I hope this finds you well and I look forward to your replies.

Mark

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing.

I am delighted to report that last week's rain storms did not cause any further
damage to my property so that is a good thing.

Given the weather patterns here in the golden state, I have come to realize
that the native Apple weather app is not the most accurate. So, based on the
recommendation of several contractors who will be helping me get my property
back in order, I started using the NOA website for my local precipitation
predictions.

NOA stands for: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

You can get your local forecast, online, by entering your Zip Code at
https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.weather.gov__;!!CV-huaVoHw!ZQ_jDMEMwxgkHcTC4BfSrgIteHygaP6e3brfi0pFaS1ibnGJ_I-nmv5g10vf2JHPQ5HT-OotlxaI31hSvF8QVygVoQkhxA$
 .

In the US, virtually every app and news outlet uses NOA for their weather
forecasts.

Two things to note, here:
1.
If one is willing to drill down a bit, one can find the same NOA info from
within the native Apple weather app but, unless one understands how the data is
formatted, I do not think the info is easily understandable.
2.
While the Weather Channel app for iOS reflects the most accurate NOA data,
astonishing as it is for me to believe, future casts are, in effect,
inaccessible via VoiceOver. I mean, you can hear the data but unless you can
see the display, you would be hard-pressed to have VO locate it. I would think
that, after all these years, the Weather Channel app would be the best app for
iOS; and yet, it is not. If any of you have any recommendations for free
weather apps I could try, let me know.

Okay, moving on:

A while back, people were asking about online dating apps. Using a couple of
these apps, I have gone on more than a few dates, with different women,
recently; while not easy, these dating sites can work in meeting someone.
It just takes patience and perseverance; so to those of you seeking someone
special, hang in there and do not give up.

Okay, onto Amazon / Audible news:
So, 3 years ago, I purchased a Whisper Sync title in both Kindle and Audible
format, at the same time, from Amazon.

Long story short, I could not download the Kindle audible companion of the book
last week. Now the Audible audio format of the title would play just fine.

It took almost an hour to reach someone at Kindle support who said she would
refund my money for the Audible version of the title if I could find the
Audible purchase order number. She could see the Kindle order purchase number
but she could not see the order number confirming that I had purchased the
Audible version.

Even with her help and patience, we could not locate the order number
confirming my Audible purchase in my Amazon Library. Just before giving up, I
realized that I keep every confirmation email I receive from Amazon in an email
folder.

It took about 15 more minutes but I was able to locate the number and when I
gave it to her, she was able to see that I had, in fact, purchased the Audible
version.

So, she refunded my money. At the time I purchased the title, the cost was
$7.99. However, the cost of that same title, today is $25.99. So, she
refunded the $25.99 as that is the replacement cost of the title. I waited a
few days, just to make certain that I received the refund then I purchased the
title, again.

My point? Always keep every email confirmation you receive from Amazon because
you never know when you may need it.

Okay, I think that about covers it, for now.

I hope this finds you well and I look forward to your replies.

Hello Mark and everybody, this is Mike from Oklahoma. Just read your email mark
on the weather in Amazon and dating and just want to say I am along with you
looking for an accessible weather app with voiceover. Right now I am using the
native weather app, and the weather channel app. They both tell me enough to
get me by for right now, but, I would like a more accessible weather app. So
Mark and everybody I hope this helps. I am along with you looking for an
accessible Weather app that works well with voiceover.
