Setting ringtones as text tones and vice versa has been available in iOS for as
far back as I can remember. They probably just changed it so users would find
it easier to find the right tones, but like someone else in this thread said,
it causes issues with iTunes tones which may be classified

I totally forgot about those with hearing aids.
I totally agree that Apple should let the customer choose notification
sounds that suit their needs.

This was a on purpose change that I suspect will be rolled back. The best they
can do is give a user option to let us choose our sound.

After upgrade to iOS 17, I lost the possibility to use my purchased tones from
iTunes Store as a alert tones because phone not seeing it
I’ve notified Apple Support about it, and they don’t know how to solve it

My notifications come through loud and clear.
I use the note sound for text messages etc and it sounds like it always has.
The only difference I find is the default notification sound.
That has changed to a lower tone which I actually like.
So, what are everyone complaining about?

There is something you can do and that is to file this as a complaint with
Apple Accessibility. Keep in mind that if nobody officially complains about it
then it is unlikely anything will be done about it. If several hundred
complaints are received then Apple may take it more serioously.
