In text messages at least with a BT keyboard to get a hard return without
sending your message press option + enter
character is found in how you treat people who cannot do anything for you!

That is the default behavior even with an external bluetooth QWERTY keyboard.
I think Apple assumes text messages are not needing paragraphs, or even hard
returns.
In Excel, you can do alt-Enter, but I have no idea if that works in text
messages.
I doubt it.
I just use punctuation in messages.
