Oops, sorry I goofed. I take back what I said: you can indeed enter more than
one word in the search field and get results. I just tested it twice and it
worked like a champ.

The time in the past that you are able to search with the calendar is dependent
on how far in the past you actually have synced on your phone.
So the reason you are not able to find what you are looking for might be

Typing multiple keywords in the search field, with or without quotes definitely
doesn't work. Typing a single keyword will, however. I have a notation in my
calendar that I have to pay my electric bill on a certain date. If I type pay
dwp or "pay dwp", I can't find the event. If I simply

I use Fantastical 2 and have never had a problem with searching.
