RE: Talking scale

2022-09-28 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
I bought my cup and spoon sets from Blind Mice Mart. I believe they also have
the bowl set.

Regarding the talking scale thing… I guess I’m just snake bit when it comes to
My Weigh. Those scales give out on me in a matter of days whenever I try to use
them. From what I recall and someone who’s using them can chime in, those scale
can only weigh to the gram. That might be an issue depending on the level of
accuracy you’re looking for too. Also, The audio feedback was kind of lagging.
Not an issue for most things, but for coffee pour overs and Aeropresses and
such, latency or the lack of real time feedback becomes a factor.

When this topic’s come up before, I’ve always recommended the DropScale from
Drop company now rebranded as Fresco. Checking them out though, it seems
they’re no longer selling that scale anymore. Fresco’s partnered with bigger
appliance brands like GE, Kenwood and Instant Brands and Bosch instead it looks
like. Too bad. The dropscale’s a good little Bluetooth scale.

In any event. I recently got a Reflex kitchen scale as it too is one that’s
been brought up on this list as an accessible option. Playing around with it,
It’s accessible enough. It seems the company has a million apps for every
possible function. The most accessible one for VoiceOver users though is
probably the “Just Scale” app. One annoying thing about it is that you have to
sign up to use the scale (thank you hide my email Apple).

One difference between the dropscale and this scale is that with the dropscale,
you could place VoiceOver focus on the element where the weight would be spoke
and VO would speak it in real time. It was pretty responsive with very little
latency if any to make a difference. Again, probably not a huge dealbreaker for
most things, but for coffee brewing recipes, every milliliter counts. The
Reflex scale on the other hand has a separate talking function from within the
app that you can adjust (selecting voice/speed) that will announce the weight
as well. It’s advertised as an accessibility feature for the visually impaired,
but it feels gimmicky. I’ve got the app voice playback speed cranked to 100%,
but no matter how fast it speaks the weight, it doesn’t give me the readings
fast enough or as close to when they are occurring to keep a current snapshot
of where I am in my pour for example. Again, I’m a coffee geek so for me and in
my circumstance, this is an issue, but it may not be for others. Unfortunately,
none of the Reflex apps seem to have the ability to have VoiceOver speak the
readings of the weight fluctuations by simply placing VO on that element. The
dropscale has the reflex scale beat in this regard hands down. I will say
though, connectivity with the Reflex app is super-fast. Not that connecting to
the dropscale was an exercise in patience, but concerns about hassling with
having to connect with a scale etc. really are no big deal. I would also add
that both these scales weigh to the tenth of the gram.

There are other Bluetooth apps advertised on Amazon ranging from around $12 to
$40 or so. I’m tempted to try another one. Mainly, something that would allow
VoiceOver to speak the measurement readings like the dropscale. I’ve had this
thing for over four years now, but like all Internet connected things, they
won’t last forever or at least their apps won’t.

A few weeks ago, I also posted an inquiry regarding the Acaia bluetooth
espresso scales and if anyone had experience with them. These are ridiculously
expensive scales used to measure out espresso shots and pour overs (everyone’s
got their hobby). Reflex has a pretty small 500gram scale that might work for
the type of mannual espresso machine I’m looking to get, but it might be just a
centimeter or two too big. That and again, the latency for measuring out a shot
would probably be a dealbreaker anyway. So if anyone knows of a super small
bluetooth kitchen scale that can weigh to the tenth of the gram and has minimal
VoiceOver latency feedback, I’d like to know as well…

If you don’t have to worry about real time measurement readings against a timer
or anything like that, then the Reflex scales would probably check a lot of
boxes for you. I believe they were even going to come out with a 33 LBS model,
but not sure about that now.

I have their 9-cup set and also the measuring spoon set and they are very nice.
Just looking on their website they do mention Maxiaids on their website under

RE: Talking scale

2022-09-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The My Weigh Vox-2 or Vox-3000, I would the newer Vox-2.
I actually just posted about this a few days ago when somebody asked about
accessible scales and kitchen/meat thermometers. Sorry, I didn't save my
message and I don't have time to search the archives for it.
In any case, it basically was just a few facts about these two scales and
links, but if you Google "My Weigh talking scales" you'll find it easily. OK,
maybe I should say I can find it easily, not sure if you can since you are 120
years old and instead of still being wet behind the ears as young people like
me often are you are probably starting to get moldy there.
