Will muting your phone with the switch on the left side take care of this? I
know muting doesn't silence voiceover but will it keep the announcements from
coming through on a call. If so, it would be a lot easier to just flip that
switch when on the phone instead of turning voiceover off.

I've used this method of turning off vo during a call. But since
upgrading to ios6 I've seen some strange behavior. I haven't figured
out a pattern yet as you seem to have done, but I am seeing some weird
behavior.
