What is the procedure if you just want to find out how much a specific ride would cost? Set the pickup location and then enter the destination. Then double tap the Fare Estimate button. The app will not give you an exact price, but it will give you a price range for the trip. The price is based on the amount of time as well as the mileage. So the actual price may vary depending on traffic, red lights, etc.
while I was exploring the app, I noticed that the app indicated that a driver was 11 minutes away then 9 minutes then 7 minutes. Shortly thereafter, it reported that "No driver available". Could someone explain this behavior? It appears that you had not yet requested an Uber ride. I expect that a driver was coming closer to your location, and then he turned off his app. He may have reached his house or stopped to get something to eat etc. In any case he was no longer available to accept new ride requests.
