I've had the exact opposite experience. The battery life is much improved
on the 4S.
I use it for checking Email on my breaks but I lock the screen when I'm not
using it.
When you say it is on but on vibrate, is it locked, or just on?

Yesterday it was 20 percent. Today was better as I discovered yesterday
that there were a lot of apps in the app switcher so just to experiment
I closed them this morning and the battery turned out to be fine today.

Well it sounds like you may have had some success in closing out
something that was in the app switcher that may have been running in
some way that it shouldn't have been. Some apps seem to at times
misbehave like that. I guess the other thing to say is that a battery
drain is not a universal
