I've been known to set up a new folder under iCloud account, and move them to
there. I don't know how it does it, but iCloud mails
go with you.

Do you not have your gmail account set up as an IMAP account? If you set it up
that way all your emails are always synced no matter on what device you set up
your gmail account.
There really is very little reason nowadays for having to manually jump through
all sorts of hoops with emails and
