Apparently this is a known bug. In fact there's an article about it in today's
Guardian.

After doing some searching for a bug I have been experiencing, I found
many references to not being able to open links in Safari or through
other apps when using iOS 9.3. I've seen reports on this from some of
the major Apple tech sites, and messages that Apple is aware of the
issue and working on

I am running the latest IOS,
When i click on a link in my gmail, it's compltely locking it up. I am
having severe difficulty. I swipe left, and swipe right, and it says
nothing.
The only way to get out of it is to hit the home button, basicly there
must be a problem with the link
