RE: looking for accessible apps for emergency info, wildfire especially. I live in Portland Oregon

2020-09-12 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Twitter and Twitterrific are the ones I use. Twitter just for the notifications
and use Twitterrific as my main Twitter app.
Another service/app I forgot to mention is PulsePoint
https://www.pulsepoint.org/
The iOS app is pretty accessible. The only issue I have with it is the
notification section under settings could be more accessible with VO, but if
you've got access to some eyeballs, you can have them help you select which
notifications to enable etc. Goes without saying, it would be better if they
just addressed this accessibility shortfall, but until they do...

I'd have to imagine that other counties have similar set ups.
Also, I find that of the social media platforms, Twitter's best with giving
updates inn real time for this sort of stuff. Some accounts I follow are: CA
Fire Scanner (@CAFireScanner), Daniel Swain (@Weather_West), San Bernardino
National Forest (@SanBernardinoNF), SB County Fire (@SBCOUNTYFIRE).
There are others out there of course, but these are the ones that are more
focused on my area/state. I also follow my local city and police/sheriff

toxic for my taste and NextDoor is more gossipy and prone to rumors and doesn't
really give any information that's faster or more relevant than the accounts I
already follow for this sort of stuff. I don’t' really do police scanners so
can't comment on that.

these days, how crazy fast and crazy huge, you never know.
Santa Rosa California mostly burned a couple of years ago the population there
is 175 thousand in the city proper and a lot more in the outlying areas. It has
burned to the ground several little towns here in Oregon and Washington, well
California for that matter.

Again, thanks for all the help guys!

Re: looking for accessible apps for emergency info, wildfire especially. I live in Portland Oregon

2020-09-11 Thread Teresa Christian
Thanks everyone! I so appreciate all the helpful info.
I ended up calling AIRA and getting them to help me get signed up on
the public alerts website.
There was also a spot to register as a blind person. I have resisted
that in the passed but went a head and did it tonight.
It sounds like my question was helpful for several other people.
I don't read all of the emails on this list, but I read quite a few of them.
I don't say much too often but every time I have there is always
useful help and I greatly appreciate that.
To Richard Turner, you are a very good JAWS user, lol, a trainer, so
if even you found both the KXL and Red Cross sites impossible, I know
it wasn't just lack of skill on my part. Yay!

I found the number for the Red Cross and plan to call and ask about shelters.
Yes we are not on any alerts, but by the time we would be, it would be
too late to figure something out.
Planning helps me not feel quite as anxious.
Also the alert system is set up with sighted folks with cars so for
those of us who don't have car access it would be too late if we
waited to leave at the level 3 alert.
That one is leave right now.
The fire probably won't get this far into town, but with the way fires
are these days, how crazy fast and crazy huge, you never know.
Santa Rosa California mostly burned a couple of years ago the
population there is 175 thousand in the city proper and a lot more in
the outlying areas. It has burned to the ground several little towns

2020-09-10 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Teresa,

Sorry to hear you guys are having it rough,

Take care.

As for apps
Is there no kind of civil emergency app for your state or city that might help?

Possibly you could talk to your local council if you have one about what the
best options are in your situation.

Take care over there and don't play with fire.

I'm in Portland Oregon and as I'm sure you've hear on the news we are having
crazy wild fires.

I am having trouble finding a good way to get up to the minute info.

Most of the resources have maps and as we all know those are not accessible.

Also, a radio station here said on their website they have listed Red Cross
centers to go tobut I didn't find anything on the website that gives that info.
Its probably there but JAWS isn't seeing it.

Right now the fires I think are about 30 miles away from me.

If it should get to the point that evac is necessary I have no car access out
of here.

Thanks for any help!

On my phone, whenever there are weather alerts or government issued
alerts, my phone notifies me. That happened when COVID-19 hit our
state very hard. I received alerts issued by the state on my phone
and it’s pretty accessible.
Also, there is a registry for people with disabilities to register
their mobile number in case of an emergency and it’ll give you alerts
of disasters via texts. Each city and county has a registration page
where you can register as a person with a disability to receive said
emergency alerts via phone.
This is a very useful resource that explains how to register in your

2020-09-10 Thread David Moore
Hi teresa! This is David Moore from Dice world! I am so happy to see you on
here! I don't use emergency apps per se, I just listen to radio stations in
my area of Columbus ohio. I do have a weather app called AccuWeather. There
is some emergency information on that, but am not sure if fire information
would be there. You may want to ask Siri for the latest fire emergency
information or something like that. Also, the nfb news line app would have
emergency information for your area. Are you subscribed to nfb news. If you
are, that would be a good suggestion. Sorry I cannot help you more than
that! Great to see you teresa, and if anyone else wants to play on dice
world with me, my username is David0107 Have a great one all!

You can also ask Siri for the Air Quality in your city and if there are
stations that track that, it will give you a number and say if it is good,
moderate, unhealthy, or hazardous. Right now in Portland, it is 367, which is
quite hazardous.
In short, keep windows and doors closed and stay indoors.
Which radio station said it had info on their web site?
I am in Portland as well.

Hi,
Do you have government alerts turned on so that you can get alerts about
natural disasters or other severe weather events including wild fires?
On my phone, whenever there are weather alerts or government issued alerts, my
phone notifies me. That happened when COVID-19 hit our state very hard. I
received alerts issued by the state on my phone and it’s pretty accessible.
Also, there is a registry for people with disabilities to register their mobile
number in case of an emergency and it’ll give you alerts of disasters via
texts. Each city and county has a registration page where you can register as a
person with a disability to receive said emergency alerts via phone.
This is a very useful resource that explains how to register in your city
and/or county.
Available at: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/civic/article/662307

Sign-up page for public alerts:
https://www.publicalerts.org/signup
You’ll have to type in your address in order to search for your county so that
you can sign up for them.
If you have to evacuate due to an impending wildfire, make sure you prepare a
pack with your essential technology, food, documents and any basic supplies for
you and/or your pet if necessary. Make sure to have a relative’s contact on
speed dial or as an emergency contact. If you have a medical ID on your iPhone
set up, it’s best to set one of your contacts as an emergency contact just in
case.
These wildfires are all as a result of dry conditions, intense heat and the
wind caused by climate change.
This is indeed scary.

Hope this helps.

looking for accessible apps for emergency info, wildfire especially. I live in Portland Oregon

2020-09-10 Thread Teresa Christian
I'm in Portland Oregon and as I'm sure you've hear on the news we are
having crazy wild fires.

I am having trouble finding a good way to get up to the minute info.

Most of the resources have maps and as we all know those are not accessible.

Also, a radio station here said on their website they have listed Red
Cross centers to go tobut I didn't find anything on the website that
gives that info. Its probably there but JAWS isn't seeing it.

Right now the fires I think are about 30 miles away from me.

If it should get to the point that evac is necessary I have no car
access out of here.

Thanks for any help!

Teresa☺
