The 5s iPhones does not have the bar code scanning feature. All features are on 
all iPhones 6 & newer.

Sorry but you're out of luck. Because the barcode reader, product channel, will 
only work on iPhone 6 and up. It will not work on the iPhone 5.

Yes, each can has a bar code.  If the device isn’t at least an iPhone 6 or 
later, they will have to rely on the short text feature.

You have two options.
I’d say first try the Short Text channel and make sure you are pointing at the 
side of the can, from about 8 to 10 inches away.  Slowly turn the can and see 
if it can get enough of the name to identify it.

If you have an iPhone 6 or later, or an iPod Touch 6th generation, or an iPad 
Air 2 and newer, you will also have the Product channel that identifies bar 
codes.  Try that and take the same approach.  When it starts beeping stop and 
see if you can get it to beep very fast and hold steady or move slightly closer 
or farther away and it should get you want you want.
I sent a demo link of the product channel yesterday.  If you need that link 
sent again, let me know.
