ActiView was such an app. The problem with these types of apps is that though many people want to use them in the theaters instead of the receivers, it seems that the apps that have come out, support a very small number of movies. I used the Disney Movies Anywhere app in 2016 to see Finding Dory

Yup, we’re having the same problem with our devices in the theater we go to. They used to work great, but now, when the jacks to the headphones aren’t cutting out, which is pretty often, the audio track hums and the volume of the description is inaudible when the movie is in a louder section.
