I'm glad they are still working on VoiceOver compatibility as Fleksy is still my favourite keyboard as I have RP and need good contrast white on black keyboard and I still have a tiny tunnel of vision to help when VO kicks Fleksy out (while writing this email, a text message alert popped up and VO focus jumped out of the edit field so the only way I could find to resume typing this email was to turn VoiceOver off!). With the old Fleksy VO app, I was able to type with near perfection very quickly, much faster than I have been able to do with predictive typing. Granted, I'm still getting used to the predictive option. I could type out a long text in leksy VO and then copy/paste it to a text or iMessage. Having that ability to easily use anywhere you have a text field in iOS would be awesome. I like Fleksy for its easier to see white on black keyboard, the way it reads out each word and the ability to use swipe gestures. And how forgiving it is of my typing errors! Just as you said, when I try to open Fleksy it gives me the following message: Fleksy Update There are new features on the App Store, Update Now. There is only an OK button and if I press it, the App Store opens and Fleksy is there, but there is no update button, just an Open button and if I tap it I am straight back to the message about updating. Unfortunately, when selecting ok to go to the Apps Store to get the update, no option was available there to get it. Also, the iTunes Store still shows version 1.9 as the latest version and that is the version I'm running. I wrote Fleksy Tech Support and they said they were aware of the issue and that it should be corrected with the next release. They said I might want to change the time setting on my iPhone to move it back a few days in order for my current Fleksy to keep working. I'm not interested in doing that since it could affect other apps. Fleksy Tech Support did not answer my questions about the nature of the specific problem nor why they were forcing users to upgrade to the new version. Hi Avnish, No, Apple does not give developers this level of access to iOS and nothing has changed there in iOS 7. I honestly don't see this a big deal now. Fleksy and another app MBraille provides near true integration thanks to support for the clipboard and especialy with MBraille support for third party apps through use of dot commands. While true integration is nice I can't see Apple doing this any time soon but we can keep trying and for now dreaming. Hi Chris, While the integration offered by the apps may be as good as it gets, I beg to differ about these apps getting close to true integration. It is still a pain in the neck when I am already in an app like when I get a mail message or text message or even somewhere I have to enter a search term to have to leave the app, load Fleksy, type my text, go back to the other app and paste it. This is a far cry from just having the Fleksy keyboard pop up where I can quickly type away. I am actually in favour of Apple's strict policy on sandboxing since it provides a much safer environment, but it would be nice if there was a way form some of these things to be integrated on the system level. Hello Sieghard, That's where MBraille has Fleksey beat. If I have text someone like my son, I know I will receive something back real quick. Hence, I just keep MBraille open, hear what he has to say and then reply back immediately with MBraille. At this point, I haven't gone out of the app and back into it. Also, in MBraille, it's not hard to use the dot SMS command to open the text message native app on the phone. True, it would be nice if these third party text processing apps could be intergrated into the iOS, but Apple won't allow this for a long time to come. So, we should be thankful for what we have now, but not to stop trying to improve the accessibility of our iOS devices. JMO. For a long time, I typed with my right index finger while holding my phone in my left hand. However, then I found that if I put the phone in my lap or on a table and use both index fingers, I was able to type faster. As has been said before, whatever works best for you, use that method. The fastest way is the one that works for you. I am not trying to be a smartass, but there really is not one way that's better than another. Some people support their phone with their fingers and use both thumbs and then go crazy, others might hold the phone in their left hand and use just the index finger of the right to tap away or others again hold it in their left hand and use multiple fingers of the right. I think I even read about one lady who said she has such small hands that she can put the phone on a table or her knees in landscape mode and type away using both hands like typing on a regular keyboard. Just play around with it, the more you use it the more proficient you most likely become and you will find out what works best for you. I have Fleksy locked in landscape mode, I rest the phone on my fingers and type with my thumbs. I had to turn off the raise to speak feature, otherwise my thumb would activate the sound. I updated earlier this morning but haven't gotten a chance to check out the update. I would be interested in hearing from any low vision people that use Fleksy, and if the new colors/themes/skins help you see the screen better. Hi, Chuck. Thanks for the Fleksy update comments. The only thing I'm concerned about is with the change to favorites and its integration with contacts. I have a limited number of contacts that I regularly text or email and I liked having a specific button on the main menu to pick one of them as the recipient of the copied text. Is that still available after the update or is another step required to first select a contact. I'm hoping that favorites already set up in Fleksy still have a dedicated button to send to them. Hi Alan, I think you can safely go ahead and upgrade if you like the Favorites list the way it was. I just tried this and while Fleksy will ask you to allow access to your contacts, I would call it sort of pseudo integration because you still have to initially go into Settings and add people to your Favorites list. The only difference is that if you go to Settings in the app and then to Settings and Setup Favorites which is the first option, you then get your list of Favorites, you select one and then select that person's email or mobile number depending on whether you usually email or text them. If you want the option to both email and text them you have to add them twice. After you are done you can then type some text, after you do a 2-finger swipe up to bring up the menu, you select Favorites and here you now see the list of people you added, it will read their name followed by either email or phone number. If you pick somebody with an email address it will open the mail app and their address will be filled in, your text is in the message body and the subject in the subject line if you typed a subject followed by an enter as your first line of text. All you have to do is tap Send. I guess I shouldn't call it pseudo integration since it is a Favorites list and not direct access to Contacts. I will maybe suggest they add a Contacts button as well in the menu which would then directly bring up the Contacts and it would allow you to select a contact, then select either their email or mobile number and then start the mail app or messages app accordingly. This way you could pick somebody you haven't added to your Favorites list although I guess you can simply choose email or message and then do that in the app. Anyhow, only difference is that you don't have to type in all your contacts separated by a comma in the settings, having access to your Contacts this way allows you to more easily manage your Favorites list. Keep in mind that if you upgrade any Contacts you manually typed in before will be gone, you are starting out with a blank Favorites list and first have to go to Settings, Manage Favorites and add them. The nice thing is that it will first say the person's name before it says their email or phone number, I believe before you just had a list of numbers and you had to know the number in order to select it. Now that Fleksy is integrated with the contacts, I don't care if Apple wouldn't include Fleksy as a native app. One can now easily Send mail or SMS without copying and pasting. Sieghard, many thanks for this detailed overview of the upgrade. I also wrote Fleksy Support with some questions about the upgrade. They said that favorites set up in a prior version would automatically be imported into the new version. Sounds like your experience with this was different. No matter since I've decided to stay with the older version and not upgrade at this time. The program is doing what I need at a good rate of speed and I don't want to give up the dedicated send buttons to my favorites which are currently located on the main menu screen. I just tried this and while Fleksy will ask you to allow access to your contacts, I would call it sort of pseudo integration because you still have to initially go into Settings and add people to your Favorites list. The only difference is that if you go to Settings in the app and then to Settings and Setup Favorites which is the first option, you then get your list of Favorites, you select one and then select that person's email or mobile number depending on whether you usually email or text them. If you want the option to both email and text them you have to add them twice. After you are done you can then type some text, after you do a 2-finger swipe up to bring up the menu, you select Favorites and here you now see the list of people you added, it will read their name followed by either email or phone number. If you pick somebody with an email address it will open the mail app and their address will be filled in, your text is in the message body and the subject in the subject line if you typed a subject followed by an enter as your first line of text. All you have to do is tap Send. I guess I shouldn't call it pseudo integration since it is a Favorites list and not direct access to Contacts. I will maybe suggest they add a Contacts button as well in the menu which would then directly bring up the Contacts and it would allow you to select a contact, then select either their email or mobile number and then start the mail app or messages app accordingly. This way you could pick somebody you haven't added to your Favorites list although I guess you can simply choose email or message and then do that in the app. Anyhow, only difference is that you don't have to type in all your contacts separated by a comma in the settings, having access to your Contacts this way allows you to more easily manage your Favorites list. Keep in mind that if you upgrade any Contacts you manually typed in before will be gone, you are starting out with a blank Favorites list and first have to go to Settings, Manage Favorites and add them. The nice thing is that it will first say the person's name before it says their email or phone number, I believe before you just had a list of numbers and you had to know the number in order to select it. Hi Alan, Everything seems to work well and it's certainly nice to finally have that Contact integration. The app does seem a bit snappier, but I still sometimes experience the issue that when I type a name or something accurately (by touching and waiting to ear the feedback) that sometimes I touch 2 or 3 letters and then when I try to type the next one Voiceover shuts up and I have to start over. But this certainly is not a new problem, everything else is very good. You know, I guess these themes might be important since they are also trying to go after regular sighted users, but I couldn't care less how it looks as long as it works. I noticed that when I hold the phone to my ear, the text that was entered is not verbalized. Can anybody confirm this? This is with the new update. Improve swipe recognition engine I can definitely confirm the loading time improvement although it is much better than 50% faster. The initial Fleksy release on my 4S took about 28 or 30 seconds to load, just now it took about 10 or 12 seconds. One thing I noticed is that when I double tapped the app, almost immediately I get a message saying that I just had to approx. type where I thought the letters were, sort of a mini explanation of how it works, then there was a “Cool, I got it” and a “More” button. The “Cool, I got it” then loaded the app with the familiar initial interface and the “More” took me into Safari and loaded the full user guide, keep in mind that reader is available for this so it’s easy to read it without extra stuff getting in the way. That message came up again when I exited and went back to Fleksy, but now it doesn’t seem to do so any more. Les Thanks for bringing this up. Just to confirm, this feature is still available but you have to switch it on in the settings. To do this, open the Settings App on your phone and find Fleksy. You need to have raise to speak on. Hello Les, You are correct, I hadn't noticed this yet, but with my iPhone 4S when I put the phone up to my ear with this version of Fleksy running SIRI was activate because I have the Raise to Speak feature enabled. Always wanted this to work and was wondering why it didn't, I guess now I know hat it works fine as long as Voiceover is not on.
