You don’t have to hold the airpods neer the camera,
Just open the case close to any part of the phone and they should pop up a
message at the bottom of the phone screen to say
ce airpods first gen

Pro and the latest case then the case is meant to be a magsafe
If you have the latest airpods
Pro and the latest case then the case is meant to be a magsafe capable case.
Note that the magsafe cases only came out a few months ago.
