If you use Siri and the phone is locked, the stop button appears.
I did not test it with Siri while the phone was unlocked.
But yes, hitting the home button, the volume button and I think the power
button all turn it off.

I just tested it using both the clock app and Siri, and in both cases, I could
just hit the volume down button to stop the timer alarm.
