Very slow on a Gbit LAN

I've just installed VNC 3.3.7 on a NT 4 server and I access it from a Win2K workstation over a GBit LAN connection. When I look at the 'VNC Connection Info', it tells me that the line speed estimate is 3776 kbit/s. And I can believe it 'cos it's awfully slow. Any ideas what it could be ?
