I have posted about this and didn't get any response so I thought I'd try
again. With 4.1.2 running, vista, configured just fine, and having WORKED for
a week now I cannot connect to my home system. When I drag the pointer icon
over the server icon on the task bar it reports I am in user mode

The most likely cause is that there is a Service-Mode server running on the
system, using port 5900, so that the User-Mode server can't use that port.
Service-Mode in VNC Free Edition doesn't currently work with Windows Vista,
so you'll want to either upgrade to VNC Enterprise/Personal
OK, how do I get the service mode out of there?
