Subject: PC vs Mac Client - Slow Macs?

I've noticed when connecting to RealVNC servers (on XP boxes
in this case) with either PC (XP Pro, P4 2.8GHz) or Mac
(10.4.x, G5 Dual 2GHz) RealVNC clients the Mac version is
  noticeably slower.
Probably only 20% of the speed of the PC client. Screen
  redraw is chunky and slow.

I thought this might be something unique to my machines / LAN
but I've had similar reports from others on a local Mac mailing
 list.

Anyone here experienced this or able to offer an explanation
  / solution?

  Cheers, Antony.

RE: PC vs Mac Client - Slow Macs?

2007-12-17 Thread Dale Eshelman
I apologize for sending this again but wanted to replay to everyone.

I use the VNC vine server 2.2 on the Macbook Pro 17 2.4 GHz Core 2
Duo HD screen 2Gb memory and Leopard 10.5.1. For the client I use
Chicken of the VNC 2.04b.

I see the mouse stick after the Mac has been on for a while. I will
have open only Safari, VNC server in the background and maybe mail. I
started watching the processes in activity monitor. When the
kernal_task increased in CPU from 4.1 to say around 7.8 the mouse
would stick. I looked at other processes to see which process was also
increasing. I noticed two process Vine Server and WindowsServer.
WindowsServer process would increase slightly and the Vine Server CPU
process would increase the amount of the kernal_task increase.

Then the kernal_task would decrease back to 4.1 after a few seconds.
The CPU increase and decrease cycle continues on a frequent basis of
every 30 seconds or less. Only restarting the system will clear the
issue.

Also when using spaces, Vine Server will sometimes create multiple
processes. Haven't fully traced down the issue on that yet

Yes, I have notice using Mac OS 10.5 that the Mac kernel will go
  from
4.7 to 8.2 (example) and a similar increase in processor
activity at the same time with VNC when it is not in use. It
causes the cursor on the Mac to hesitate or stick temporarily.

There is definitely something going on with VNC Server
sitting there is the background when it is not even in use.
