Lalo, ideally your API would be almost the same as the existing bindings
(except extended to be more "Pythonic" where appropriate), do you think?

There is no need for the ProxyListener, and it's going to get dropped
from the design. When I wrote the design doc, I didn't remember the
internal workings of VOS very well - if you annotate the file you will
see many other mistakes which are already corrected. In this case, when
I discovered that updates are simply another kind of message, I was like
"hah, cool" :-)

As far as I am concerned, I am only developing with 2.6. I guess if it is
relatively easy we can continue to support 2.4, but it seems to me like
it's mostly a hassle that doesn't buy us much. Also the Crystal Space
wxgl plugin is only set up to compile against 2.6, I think.

I would appreciate a few pointers...

Hi Kao, welcome back :-)

Could you try the CVS version? If I recall correctly, I fixed a number of
issues that came up in 0.23.0-pre1. I have been meaning to put together a
0.23.0-pre2 but haven't quite gotten around to it. Perhaps tonight.

System details:
Mac OS X (10.4.4)
XCode 2.2 (using gcc 4.0.1)
current fink release, started with 0.8.0, updated and switched to unstable
branch

installed boost1.32 package according to instructions fropm the VOS manual

I haven't had a chance to try it out on OS X. While both my roommates
each have Macs, I need to ask one of them to install the latest XCode.

While I haven't worked with it recently, I have written quite a bit of
SWIG code and while it isn't the easiest thing in the world, it much less
effort than would be required to write the equivilent code by hand.

Anyway, not to say that Swig isn't the solution for the most *complete*
binding, but if Lalo needs to do it *now* in order to implement usable
scripting for message handlers and listeners, then that's more important.

Yea, it sounds like Lalo has something different in mind, so perhaps the
way to go is to go ahead with two different Python bindings and eventually
have a "bake-off" to decide which is better :-)

Their own CrystalZilla, so to speak. FireFox in 3D.

Callum Prentice actually approached me back last April and wanted to
contract me to work on Crystalzilla for them. I wanted to do it, but my
day job got busy and so I didn't have the time. So Crystalzilla could
have been ubrowser, but things didn't work out that way.

They've encountered a problem though, and its name is work load. So, to
speed things up abit... LindenLab's Cory is now offering a code bounty.
Anyone who can fix the issue he's discussing will get a free region in
SecondLife, with the payments paid for a year. (Thats a 195$ monthly
worth of 'land'). If you can solve other issues, there's other benefits.

Details here: http://secondlife.blogs.com/prompt/2006/02/firefox_ubrowse.html

Looks like they're trying to get Flash working... Plugins have been a big
problem for people trying to get Firefox to render off-screen.

One thing, I wonder what the need for the ProxyListener is? If you
want to use a message handler instead of a listener, you just have to
handle the "update" messages. On the other hand, having API
specifically for implementing listeners is extremely convenient, and I
recommend including that in your Python API.
