They arn't functions, they are typedefs.  uint8_t and such.

stdint.h is part of the C99 standard.  it is inexcusable that visual c++ 
doesn't support it, but...   Grr.

Hah.  Not when the problem only shows up on Windows, where Valgrind isn't 
available.  And gdb doesn't work.  Of course, you are correct that 
Valgrind probably would have caught it, but ideally the _compiler_ should 
have issued a warning, but I must have missed it (?)
