Well, unable to read partition table sounds pretty bad.
But for what it's worth, zip disks are generally formatted as fat on
partition 4 (/dev/?da4).

Also, see if you can dd the device and see if the drive comes on.
# dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/zero bs=1024k count=10
