[Vserver] ia32 Vserver guests accessing 4GB of memory on an amd_64 Vserver host?
I have linux-vserver installed on a 2.6.17 debian amd_64 system. I have used debootstrap to create ia32 vserver guests on the amd_64 host. So far, the ia32 guests seem to run just fine. I understand that each ia32 vserver cannot access more than 4gb of memory. However, can multiple ia32 vservers cumulatively use more than 4gb of RAM on a 64-bit system? I don't mind if each vserver is confined to 4gb of addressable memory. However, I don't want all of the vservers confined to the same 4gb address space when 16gb of memory is available on the server. So, if I install 16gb of memory in a 64-bit vserver host, can several 32-bit vserver guests together use more than 4gb of RAM? Or, do I have to run 64-bit guests? There's no problem in patching those versions, other than the Makefile which you'll have to patch manually. FYI, the exploit that 2.6.17.5 and 2.6.17.6 fix does not work inside guests. -- Daniel Hokka Zakrisson GPG id: 06723412 GPG fingerprint: A455 4DF3 990A 431F FECA 7947 6136 DDA2 0672 3412 ___ Vserver mailing list Vserver@list.linux-vserver.org http://list.linux-vserver.org/mailman/listinfo/vserver
[Vserver] unionfs
hi all, I tried to compile many kernels (2.6.15.x,2.6.16.x,2.6.17.x) with vserver and unionfs patches without succes. I tried with only vserver or only unionfs patch with succes. Could someone give me some working combinations (gcc-x.x / 2.6.x.x / patch-2.6.x-rcx-vs2.0.2-rcx.diff / unionfs 1.x) thank you in advance xavier ___ Vserver mailing list Vserver@list.linux-vserver.org http://list.linux-vserver.org/mailman/listinfo/vserver

In the mean time I've hacked the script and given it my own text and taken the 5 second timeout out. Please let me know what you find out. I'd _love_ to create another case for FC5 without the timeout. My investigation showed that FC5 is indeed still affected by this. I have attempted to port the yum patch to FC5's version (2.6.1), and the result can be found at http://daniel.hozac.com/vserver/yum-2.6.1-chroot.patch My initial testing says it doesn't break yum, though I have yet to verify that it actually solves the problem. The patch requires support in util-vserver though, which my util-vserver-*0.30.210-19.fc5 packages will include. -- Daniel Hokka Zakrisson GPG id: 06723412 GPG fingerprint: A455 4DF3 990A 431F FECA 7947 6136 DDA2 0672 3412 ___ Vserver mailing list Vserver@list.linux-vserver.org http://list.linux-vserver.org/mailman/listinfo/vserver
Re: [Vserver] Cannot install yum on vserver guest on FC5
Roderick A. Anderson wrote: Daniel, Thanks. I've been fighting other battles so haven't had a chance to get very far into this. I was coming to the same conclusion as I took out the yum version test and simply used yum.conf instead of yum-hack.conf and it broke. That's mostly because the yum.conf file uses chrootfs:// and hostfs:// which are added by the patch and judging by the response of the upstream yum developers will never be accepted. This does bring up a possible new issue ( or I've never seen it discussed before. ) There appears to be a command line length limit when using vyum. I was building a script that built our stock guests ( verses a copy as I still haven't got that worked out ) and as we added more packages I just edited the script adding them in forgetting to test. I moved the script to another system and started getting (v)yum failures even if I copy and pasted one line at a time. Finally got a clue ( from somewhere ) and cut the number of packages down for each call of vyum and they worked. How many packages per command did you have? I seem to have no problems installing over 2000 packages in a single command (other than it taking a really long time :)). -- Daniel Hokka Zakrisson GPG id: 06723412 GPG fingerprint: A455 4DF3 990A 431F FECA 7947 6136 DDA2 0672 3412 ___ Vserver mailing list Vserver@list.linux-vserver.org http://list.linux-vserver.org/mailman/listinfo/vserver
