I have tracked this down to a setting in Mail

in outlook beneath the subject field there should be save
attachements, click on it save them to the desktop (for easy finding)
then check the names, it's possible that the names have no file

I have 27gb Deskstar internal HD that I have done a clean install of
OS X 10.4 + updates. G4#1 AGP works fine, G4#2 AGP hangs on start up

How about just clicking on the box marked send Windows friendly
attachments which appears at the bottom of the dialog box you get
when you click on the attachments icon (paperclip) in OSX mail.
