Thanks for pursuing the finer details. The Lexmark uninstall app may have
left some residual stuff. As the X1170 driver didn't fully install I still
had access to the downloaded install and other files, in a folder readable
with Finder. This folder included the Uninstall utility.

Strategy, but don't use the software that is on it!
Don't use the software that comes on the Western Digital MyBook.
Erase the Drive and format it Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
