My G5 1.8SP 10.5.8 is showing signs of malaise. Specifically hanging on starting applications, requiring a force quit and try again and inordinately long time for copying in the Finder Often will halt and sit for half a minute or so then carry on. I have done all the obvious:- cache

Hi Severin, Until Ronni chimes in with a, no doubt, more germane response, I just wanted to say that on two occasions in past when I was completely baffled, the problem turned out the be the hard-disc controller. These were not Apple computers so the problem could be a lot more rare on Apple

Hi Severin, Could be one of many things causing slow downs freezes. Might be a case of eliminating a few to see what is happening. A couple of things you could check: 1.Have you booted into another Administrator's Account to see if you experience problems also in that Administrator Account?

Since you have plenty of space you could try temporarily making a partition on your HD and doing a fresh install on it. It might seem like a pain but it'd be a good way to determine whether the problem is software or hardware related. If you do decide to go down this path then try to only

My thanks to Ronni and Peter and others for suggestions. I have zapped the PRAM, something I always forget, and will erase the unused disk space when there are a couple of hours free, which is how long Disk Utility says it will take. Maybe, with these measures, it will just go away!
