I have converted two VOB files from a DVD to MP4 files to import into iMovie.
They were both videoed today on a camcorder then the DVD was made for me.
One has converted fine retaining the 16:9 aspect ratio.
The other has converted with both sides squashed

I think it depends on what resolution you need, the cheaper screens will only
do 1920x1200 at the moment I only know of two that will go to 2560 x 1440 and
they are the Apple 27 screen and the Dell 27. We have one of the Dell's at
the office and it's not too bad but the Apple screen

Just to add a bit from personal experience to Ronni's solutions.
I used Handbrake with custom parameters to convert incorrectly transcoded 4:3
AR to 16:9 AR.Worked for 2 out of 3 clips. Last one stubbornly retained
the stretched vertical with squashed sides - more like a
