Yes Severin,
There used to be a work around by replace the dvdplayback.framework file,
(“/System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/DVDPlayback”) --
but that doesn't work anymore as the files are not there anymore, because of
System Integrity protection...

A penny has just dropped - maybe?
In Yosemite days I converted my iMac to a Fusion Drive (a brilliant move!) but
this required removal of the DVD drive for installation of the SSD. Afterwards
there was still no problem playing DVDs with DVD player on plugged in external
drives.
