The other thing you can try is a PRAM reset and if still no joy then an SMC
reset. Both of these can reset Sound.

That may correct it as well.

Many thanks - I'll try these tomorrow, as it's getting late.
I checked out for cures on the web earlier and some
were saying chuck out preferences and other files, but I was not game
to try that quite yet.
