We have had a problem like this. We found if we turned off the preference
Allow Fast Save that the speed to backup file was sped up hugely.
goto Tools : Preferences : Save Tab and uncheck the allow fast saves box
This may not be your problem but worth a go

Odd problem I am having on a G3 iMac running OS 9.2.1 (formerly 9.1)
At very refular intervals the mouse freezes for several seconds
whilst the computer writes to the hard drive.
I have tried everything from:
checking for viruses
running Tech Tool Pro 2.5.5
running DiskWarrior
upgrading the
