It can depend on your usage, but here's what I found for myself and my iPad
(iPad2,..not lucky enough for an iPad gen4 yet).
First off, here are the plans for data from Telstra -

If you're not going to use it a lot then
I agree with Daniel about the 12 month prepaid option. It saves having to even
think about your access to data.
I use my ipad all the time, on wireless at home and 3g when out, so its worth
it to always have it available.
It would depend on how much you use it, of course.

Definitely stick with Telstra for best coverage, especially country coverage,
and depending how often how much data you will be using on 3G Network I also
agree with Daniel Susan on the 12 month prepaid option.
