My iMac G5 does the same periodically. I figured it was overheating,
as it was happenning after it had been on for a while.
So now I have a small fan next to it (clearing the air behind it). If
it goes to sleep, I switch on the fan and it is all fine from there
on.
Hope there is a proper fix.

But unfortunately, this machine isn't going to sleep but shutting off
completely.

Mine does - it won't wake up with the keyboard/mouse.
