Have you looked at Memory Maps and access to Hema maps through them. It has
the advantage that you can trial maps for a short while for evaluation, the
app is free but there is a charge for maps.

Bad Elf. It's powered in series with the iPad. Later iPads have built in GPS I
believe.

Yes. This area needs lots of research.
I found that printed HEMA maps weren't good enough. WikiCamps is a
cool app for finding camping sites, but it uses Apple maps, and
the detail is woeful.

I wasn't clear. I didn't want a turn by turn solution as I was
following the old telegraph line from Cocklebiddy to Israelite Bay! :-)
But I did want to know if the next turn off on the map was 200m away or
2km! A direct distance mechanism would be great, or even an indication

detour around a fallen tree or the real track???
All good fun in the end.
The best combo I've come up with is Memory Map app and my map of choice, the
free AusTopo 250k. Not a perfect solution but I've grown used to it.
