Faxing with USB modem

2006-02-20 Thread Robert Howells

Hello Wamug,

For those who have to use an external USB modem with the later model
Macs,

there is a way to use it to send a FAX.

I picked that snippet up from Macintouch and have a copy in PDF here.

I'm currently scanning all my old photos going back to the 50's at
times.

The equipment I'm using are:

Negatives could yield a better result, but is your scanner capable?
Also are they still available?

Also, is there a good application to touch the photos, without
going to the
expensive solutions of the full blown Adobe Photoshop or similar. I
do not
have much experience in using graphic software, and have only now
started
using GraphicConverter which I find quite difficult to use knowing
nothing

at all of the technical terms used in the graphics world.

GraphicConverter X is a great program mainly designed as a converter
of files, but has evolved to offer a fairly good range of tools that
would do the job you require. One huge advantage is Batch processing
set required results and walk away, yes photoshop can do, but GC
offers some options even Adobe cannot obtain, also a little easier to
configure. So, visit their webiste http://www.lemkesoft.com/en/
index.htm and download the manual also visit tutorials and workshops.

Photoshop does offer some extras, but are the extra's worth it? I
would have to say maybe, but I have digitally advanced with Gimp
using Linux and now OS X, but have used Photoshop extensively. I
would say Photoshop is more stable and a standard for which others
either join or try to obtain a level offering a working environment.
Gimp has a few offerings and you will need to install X11, but it is
a free GNU program, and their is a Photoshop user friendly interface
version known as GimpShop.

You should be able to do in Gimp or GraphicConverter X that could be
done in Photoshop for what you are aiming to achieve. Obtain more,
but each has specifics Photoshop has lots it can do and so do the
others. End of the day it comes down to the tools that are available,
which you feel comfortable and confident with, for some whom have
choice we have favourites for each situation.

Cheers!

Hi WAMUG'ers,

Many thanks to Peter, Rob and Adrian for their advice. Yes, unfortunately
this is a complex matter and one that must be tackled with lots and lots of
knowledge to obtain the right result.

I will have a look at The Gimp, and see whether I can learn it fairly
quickly. I'll also have a look at Lemsoft's Web site to learn a bit more.

A little bit 'off-topic', I borrowed an old family album when last in
Mauritius and scanned the photos and distributed the data on CDs to various
family members. Boy! What a way to keep family ties and tradition going. I
was just not prepared to find so many people interested in those old photos
of an era well gone by.

Many thanks again for your time and advice.

Best regards,

Philippe

This is a huge topic, Phiippe, and not really possible to cover in a
 simple email.

Briefly, though, you should not be scanning at less than 300 dpi,
based on the assumption that you will eventually want to print your
scans. Too low a resolution will result in disappointing results. By
the same token, going over 600 dpi simply creates larger files, not
 necessarily better results.

Processor upgrade for G4 cube

2006-02-20 Thread Colin Gordon

Does anyone have any experience with upgrading processors in a G4 cube?.
I found this site
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/SG4C1800/
advertising a 1.8GB upgrade.

Any advice or feedback on this would be appreciated.

Old Mac computers

2006-02-20 Thread Peter Martinson

Hi everyone,

Well I've finally bitten the bullet!

I currently have about 100 -130 Mac computers, monitors and printers (in
my games room) that I was intending to set up as a borrowing resource
for students without computers. Unfortunately as a Deputy Principal and
looking after all of our network ( at the moment) I just can't find the
time to re image them etc.

I hate throwing out good computers that work so.

I remember a group that were setting up computers for use in Timor as
well as the Computer Angels in Perth.

These computers range from the original Classics to 6400's. ( I can
still use iMacs on our network).

I'm particularly interested in the Timor idea as the older models are
more likely to be accepted.

Do any of you have any contact info for me?

thanks in advance.

Hi Peter,

if you contact Notre Dame University in Freo, they support a project
in Timor called the Bagita center, where they can always use extra
machines to teach local people computing skills.

cheers

I'm pretty sure it will work.
